Bought a cheap HDMI splitter to link up my TV. Worked OK at first, but the next day, every time I attach the second HDMI cable the power goes

Sounds like there is a short occurring somewhere. Sorry, I have to ask: What part of 'cheap' didn't you understand? You get what you pay for.
