Feature Request - implement EDID override

Hello,

it would be nice if the Intel Graphics driver would support overriding EDID information like described in this document from Microsoft:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg487330 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg487330

Why is this needed?

In a common HTPC (multimedia PC) setup with a PC, AVR (audio video receiver) and a television, the EDID information stored in the receiver & television that is passed to the PC determines the video and audio capabilities like: supported resolutions, supported audio formats etc ..

The problem is that very often the system only "sees" the EDID information of the television, and not that of the receiver, and so you don't get support for audio formats like DTS, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD that are supported by the receiver ...

The latest Sandy bridge CPU and corresponding chipset support all these sound standards, but they often not useable cause of these EDID problems.

Actually it really does not matter what video card / integrated graphics you use, NVidia and AMD graphics have the same problem, but their drivers

allows people to override the EDID information like is described in the above linked document from Microsoft.

Please implement this stuff, shouldn't be that hard to do, for one of you senior driver programmers it's probably just a few hours of work ...

Thank you

Christian

Great news! This completes the platform support. These drivers enable the use of 3rd party EDID applications for internal and external panels on Intel platforms.

Hi,

Do you have the same driver for Gemini lake platform?

(I am using the N4120 CPU).

Apologies all for not updating this thread too. Just updated the original answer post.

I'm still waiting on the last driver release which will fill the gap in the middle. The driver is currently targeted release in a few weeks.

Thanks for the extremely quick response.

I look forward to the release of the drivers. I would also like to confirm that with the update of the driver, will I be able to set a custom resolution and framerate for the built in display of the laptop?

Using a 3rd party app, yes you should be able to depending on what the panel itself can actually handle.

Those that are using 15.45 for 6th & 7th Gen [Skylake & Kaby Lake], I apologize, I made a mistake and announced too soon. The code changes didn't make it into the 4590 though they are targeted for the next official release.

The changes should be in the Beta driver that was just released so I changed the link in the Correct Answer post to the Beta for now, please give that a try and post back if it's working or not working for you to confirm. Again, I apologize for the thrash and am hoping the Beta can work as an interim solution until our next official 15.45 release. I'm also exerting heavy pressure to speed along the 4th & 5th Gen release [15.40]; it looks like we're still at least 2-3 weeks out for that one.

With Intel test driver "win64_154032.4568" I have success in applying 4K @ 50 Hz by defining a custom resolution with CVT-RB timing standard in http://www.amazon.ca/s?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=intel%20hd%20graphics Intel HD graphics control panel with following devices;

Surface Pro 2, 4200U, 4400 HD graphics

LG 43UH6100 4K, HDMI 2.0

Plugable miniDP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 active adapter

Amazon Basics high speed cable.

Not able to go beyond 50Hz though. Same 'maximum bandwidth reached' message. Hope Intel promised 4th/5th gen driver 15.40 will take this limit away as well? Keeping fingers crossed.

Even with this jump, the difference between 30 Hz and 50 Hz is huge in terms of look and response.

Hi Bryce,

I have a DN2820FYKH hooked up to a TV that will do 23p refresh rate at 1920x1080 but not 1280x720. The driver will report to applications that it can handle 23p on 1280x720 but it's just showing a 1280x720 "postage stamp" in the middle of actual 1920x1080 output... aka "Center Image". My TV manual states support for 59p and 60p only at 1280x720 and sure enough the Intel display driver shows the desired "Maintain Display Scaling" for 1280x720 at 59p and 60p refresh.

Is this common behavior for all Intel display drivers? If the TV won't support a specific combination of resolution and refresh rate, shouldn't there be a way for the user to tell the display driver to also not support this combination? "Center Image" is awful - i'd rather the driver just not support this combination. I was hoping that we might see EDID override for 3rd gen/15.33 as this could give the workaround of supporting these refresh rates in the TV so display driver would offer "Maintain Display Scaling". If EDID override won't be coming to 3rd gen/15.33, will Intel ever update these drivers to allow the user to prevent resolution/refresh rate combinations where "Maintain Display Scaling" is not possible?

Hi Bryce,

Thanks so much for this. However I am struggling to achieve the equivalent of the override procedure described here: https://sites.google.com/site/ebobster/stuff/displayportblanking DisplayPort Blanking / Screen Autodetect Problems - ebobster

How can we force the EDID to always be loaded from file to prevent Displayport hotplug issue, as is possible with nVidia? I was able to extract a EDID using moninfo, but am not sure what to do next.

Thanks!

Hi averix & mariakatosvich

This change allows the use of 3rd party EDID apps to manipulate the EDID profiles found in our Control Panel. You must use the 3rd party app to make the changes and you must consult the usage guidance and limitations of the 3rd party app for its proper use.
