Game crashes on Intel Iris Xe with DirectX 12 (Forza Horizon 5 & Fortnite)

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3530 laptop with an Intel Core i7-1355U processor, integrated Intel Iris Xe

For the past few days, every game that uses DirectX 12 crashes either at launch or during loading (for example, Forza Horizon 5 and Fortnite in DX12 or the new DX12-based Performance mode). However, the same games run perfectly when using DX11 (in Fortnite’s case).

I have already tried:

  • Updating and reinstalling Intel Graphics drivers.

  • Reinstalling Windows and the games.

  • Verifying game file integrity.

  • Running in compatibility mode.

  • Deleting game configuration and temporary files.

The issue persists only with DX12. I suspect this could be a compatibility issue between Intel Iris Xe drivers and DX12 execution on Intel 13th Gen CPUs.

Could you investigate this case and confirm if there is a known bug?

Hello Sianeli,

Thank you for posting on Intel Community Forum.

To assist you effectively, I suggest that you create a separate thread for Forza Horizon 5 and we'll prioritize the issue with Fortnite on this thread. Kindly share the information below.

1. Was this working fine before?

2. Are there any recent changes to the system?

3. Did you try the drivers from Dell?

4. What troubleshooting steps have you performed so far?

5. Are there any error messages when Fortnite crashes?

6. Which game distribution platform are you using (Steam, Epic Games, etc.)?

Additionally, to have a better understanding of your system configuration and components please generate System Support Utility (SSU) report. Please follow instructions here and send the report - How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Jed, thanks for the quick response.

Here’s the information you requested:

  1. Was this working fine before?
A day before this happened, I upgraded Windows from 23H2 to 24H2.
After that, I updated the graphics drivers from Intel’s website and then updated Fortnite to the version that introduced the new DX12 Performance Mode. Everything worked fine for one day, but on the next day the problem started — first with Forza Horizon 5 and a few hours later with Fortnite.

  2. Any recent changes to the system?
Yes — the Windows upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2, plus the updates to the drivers and the game.

  3. Did you try the drivers from Dell?
Yes, I have tested both the latest Dell drivers and the latest generic Intel drivers.

  4. Troubleshooting steps performed:

    • Reinstalled Fortnite and the Epic Games launcher.

    • Deleted configuration and save files.

    • Tested compatibility mode with different Windows versions.

    • Updated Windows, BIOS, and GPU drivers.

    • Tested DX11 (works fine) and DX12 (crashes on launch).

  5. Error messages:
No specific error code appears — the game simply closes after the loading screen when using DX12 or DX12 Performance Mode.

  6. Game platform:
    Epic Games.

I’m also attaching the SSU report you requested so you can review my system configuration.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello Sianeli,

Thank you for sharing all this information.

Since the issue happened after the Windows update. Have you had the chance to roll it back to 23H2 to further isolate the issue? Also, kindly follow the steps below.

1. A new BIOS version was recently released, kindly download the version 1.23.2

2. Download the latest driver version 32.0.101.6989 and ensure to perform clean installation

If the issue persists, please let me know.

Best regards

Hello Jed,

Thank you for the follow up

I have already update my BIOS to version 1.23.2 and also performed a clean installation of the Intel graphics driver version 32.0.101.6989 as you suggested. After these updates, Fornite now works fine in DirectX 12 (including the new Performance mode).

However, Forza Horizon 5 is still crashing at launch.

Do you have any additional recommendations specifically for Forza Horizon 5? Could this be related to Directx 12 compability?

thank you again for your support.

Best regards,
Sianeli

Try rolling back to the latest whql certified drivers, the .6987 instead, the most recent one seems to have issues with any game that runs dx12

Hi, I'm also having this same issue with fortnite crashing on dx12 performance mode when launching, I'm on a dell 15 laptop (dc15250) with an i5 1334u and the iris xe graphics it comes with (when upgraded to dual channel 16gb ram), on the newest bios and intel drivers, please help with this, as fortnite is unplayable if I cannot use dx12 performance mode.

Hello Sianeli,

I'm pleased to hear that updating the BIOS and performing a clean installation of the latest driver resolved the issue.

As the problem with Forza Horizon 5 still persists, I strongly recommend creating a separate thread for it. This will help prevent confusion and allow us to provide more focused and effective assistance.

If you have any further questions or concerns regarding Fortnite, please don't hesitate to reach out within this thread.

Hi Jed,

Thank you very much for your support. After updating the BIOS to version 1.23.2 and installing the Intel graphics driver 32.0.101.6989 with a clean installation, Fortnite is now working correctly again in both DX12 and Performance mode.

I really appreciate the help, the issue is solved on my side and you can close this thread.

Additionally, I would like to let you know that I have already created a separate thread for Forza Horizon 5 so we can continue with that issue there.

Best regards,
Sianeli

Hello Sianeli,

Thank you for confirming the resolution and for taking the time to share your update. I’m glad to hear that Fortnite is now running correctly after the BIOS and driver updates. Hopefully, it may help other community members experiencing similar behavior. Since the thread is now solved, I will proceed to close it. Please keep in mind that this thread will no longer be monitored by Intel
