I play legacy games online using Windows 7 and recently encountered graphics problems caused by a driver update of my onboard HD 4000 that I did not initiate or be notified of. I do not have the Intel Software Manager installed. Is this something that Intel Management Engine Components (IMEC) might have done? Can I avoid this in the future by uninstalling IMEC? Though I have Win 10 installed on a separate partition, I don't use it because of my inability to keep the driver version from August, 2012 that works with my games; haven't been able to stop driver updates there beyond the next reboot.

From my understanding the management engine has nothing to with graphics but is responsible for protected content like playing a movie from a DVD etc.

Thanks for the reply, but I haven't used Windows Update in several months (since they started bundling updates into one file each month), and my graphics problem (game going to taskbar repeatedly during play) just started happening a week ago. I think I solved the problem for the time being by deleting the device (HD 4000) and its software, rebooting to generic VGA graphics, and then installing the preferred HD 4000 software (Aug 2012). If you're confident that there is no updating program contained in the installation software, such as that in ProgramData\Intel\Intel(R) Update Manager, then hopefully disabling Windows Updates as shown in Methods One in your link will stop future updates of the graphics driver.

Hello craigwf40,
Thank you for contacting Intel Communities.
In this case, as Stefan3D mentioned, the Intel® Management Engine is not involved in the update process of the graphics driver but Windows Updates is.
There are three ways to update your graphics driver:
- Through Windows Updates.
- Using the Intel® Driver Update Utility.
- Manual update (when you download the driver from our website and you install it).
The suggestion provided by Stefan3D on how to avoid automatic Windows 7* updates is accurate.
You can also check the following article from How To Geek, but you may look for Display adapters in device manager, the article is for Windows® 10 but also applies to Windows 7*:

Hope this information helps.
Please let me know how it goes.

Hi. How do change settings in Windows 10 to disable the automatic update of the Intel Graphics driver? I want Windows updates, but want to prevent the Graphics driver from being installed because there are compatibility issues with my computer.
Thanks. Michael
