Intel UHD 620 able to run QHD?

Hi guys,

I was wondering wheter any of you have experience in connecting a laptop to an external monitor that has superior resolution? In my case, I have a Asus Zenbook S13 i5 8th Gen with a Intel 620 UHD graphics card and plan on buying a 27 inch monitor (https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-27-monitor-s2721ds/apd/210-axkp/monitors-monitor-accessories) that displays QHD. Outputs on my laptop: 2x USB 3.1 Type C and 1x USB 3.1 Type A Gen 2. If I buy a USB-C to DP cable like this one:  https://www.amazon.de/Inateck-DisplayPort-Chromebook-Thunderbolt-kompatibel/dp/B075Q5T6JT/ref=asc_df_B075Q5T6JT/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309882193183&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8846441120789546013&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9042409&hvtargid=pla-594964229752&psc=1&th=1&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=62407011740&hv...

will I be able to run QHD @60HZ on my monitor? Appreciate every answer!

Using one of the USB-C connectors that exposes one of the processor's DP 1.2 outputs. support for QHD 2560x1440 should work.

Thank you very much for your answer, Sir. I'm not entirely sure whether I understood what you are saying. What exactly is a DP processor? I thought DP is an input?

Sorry, DP is DisplayPort. The processor can support higher resolutions using its DisplayPort output mode (versus its HDMI output mode). See the DisplayPort and HDMI pages in Wikipedia for details. The processor supports DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4.

Hello Lemar

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

We are checking this thread and we would like to know if you need further assistance.

Also, the information provided by n_scott_pearson is correct regarding that it should work. The graphics driver and graphics controller (GPU) can work at 4K 4096x2304@60Hz resolution over DisplayPort™ (DP) 1.2. However, we said "should" work because we cannot guarantee at all since your computer manufacturer (OEM) might have placed limitations on their system so the recommendation is to check this directly with them.

Also, there may be bandwidth limitations in the cable being used (teorical Max. Specification Bandwidth vs Max. Effective Bandwidth) or when using video/cable adapters.

Based on DELL* website https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-27-monitor-s2721ds/apd/210-axkp/monitors-monitor-accessories#techspecs_section, the Display's Native Resolution is QHD 2560 x 1440 @75Hz which requires less bandwidth than the one needed for the Max Resolution supported by the GPU (4096x2304@60Hz). You may use a Bandwidth Calculator like Kramer* to compare this facts: https://k.kramerav.com/support/bwcalculator.asp

So generally speaking, yes, it should work. Please let us know if you have additional inquiries or if we can consider this thread "Solved".

Hello Lemar

We are checking this thread and since we have not heard back from you we will proceed to close it now.

As a last clarification, the graphics controller will display any resolution equal or lower than the Max Resolution supported by the GPU (4096x2304@60Hz) that is also supported by the display. The DELL* Display's Native Resolution is QHD 2560 x 1440 @75Hz which requires less bandwidth than the one needed for the Max Resolution supported by the GPU. However, if you are interested in knowing if your display is capable of working under specific combination of resolution + refresh rate (e.g. 2560 x 1440 @60Hz) also known as "Supported Modes", our recommendation is to confirm this directly with the display manufacturer.

You may also check this link to determine Maximum Supported Resolution on Intel® Graphics Technology and base on your processor model:

If you need any additional information, please submit a new question as this thread will no longer being monitored. It has been a pleasure to assist you.
