Hello Intel,

I have already asked Mojang for support here : https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-32606 [MC-32606] Intel HD Graphics crash while playing Minecraft 1.6.x - Mojira

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 15R model 5537 for my kids to play the game "Minecraft". Their old laptop died, so I was forced to get a new one. The new laptop has an Intel HD Graphics 4400 . The laptop itself is configured with 8GB RAM, 1TB hard disk drive, i5-4200u processor, Windows 8.0 x64.

The issue is that when the kids play minecraft, when in-game (not on menus), after an arbitrary amount of time ( from 30 seconds to 10 minutes), the video driver will crash with the message "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". I can force the issue by playing the game in full-screen mode, then pressing ALT+TAB to return to the desktop.

Originally, the laptop came configured with Dell-supplied drivers version 9.18.10.3165 . The pre-recorded response from Mojang is "your video drivers are out-of-date, upgrade them", so I downloaded and installed 9.18.10.3257 from Intel. Same issue. I then downloaded and installed the Windows 8.1 BETA drivers 10.18.10.3282. Same issue. (Yes I am on Win8.0 and these are Win8.1 drivers ; but they seem to work except for the one issue). I have left the laptop running the BETA drivers.

In trying to troubleshoot the issue, I temporarily replaced the hard disk drive and installed Windows 7 x64 Retail on it, plus the Intel Chipset drivers, and back to the production Intel drivers 9.18.10.3257. The issue is still present, but I was able to get additional debug information. The Minecraft "development console" ( a plain text logging facility ) shows the following after the video drivers crash:

Hi tedtaylor,

My best recommendation is to reinstall the driver. You can uninstall it from the device manager, restart the computer and then install the new driver. You can get the driver at the following link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3719&DwnldID=23106&ProductFamily=Graphics&ProductLine=Desktop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=4th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors+with+Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+4400&DownloadType=Drivers&lang=eng https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3719&DwnldID=23106&ProductFamily=Graphics&ProductLine=Desktop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=4th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors+with+Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+4400&DownloadType=Drivers&lang=eng

In case that you are still having issues, my best recommendation is installing the latest driver provided by your computer manufacture since they design and create custom drivers for your unit.

Hi kevin_intel,

I will try re-installing the same three drivers that are available to me and that I have already tried:

  • The latest Dell-supplied drivers for Intel HD Graphics (v9.18.10.3165)
  • The latest Intel-supplied drivers from your link (v9.18.10.3257)
  • The beta Intel-supplied drivers (v10.18.10.3282)

As per the proverbial definition : Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I do not expect any different results. However, I will follow your instructions, and will post my results back here.

Thanks,

Ted.

Hi kevin_intel,

I re-downloaded and re-installed all three drivers (one at a time), with the same result : when I play Minecraft in full-screen mode, then ALT+TAB to the desktop, the display driver crashes. It will also crash spontaneously, and by itself, if I play it for any small amount of time.

What information can I give Intel or Mojang to resolve this problem ? See also the link to the Mojang trouble ticket, where they lay the blame completely and squarely on Intel. Link here: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-32606 [MC-32606] Intel HD Graphics crash while playing Minecraft 1.6.x - Mojira . Of course, the problem is not as simplistic as Mojang states. It takes two parties to be incompatible with each other.

I really wish you can speak with them and work out what is wrong with their game with your drivers.

Thanks,

Ted.
