No sound from miniDisplayPort on Intel Graphics

Hey there

I own a Lenovo ThinkPad T440s, bought it used from a company.

I'm not sure is it a 3d or 4th generation of graphic card

First of all I reinstalled OS (Windows 10x64) and got the latest versions of all drivers (current is 20.19.15.4835 for video and 6.16.00.3197 for Intel Audio).

When I connected it to tv via miniDP port I had an image but no sound at all. System recognised TV as a digital playback device, but can't play any sound through it

Then I connected it to the ViewSonic monitor and the problem repeated. Cables are ok because I used them with my old ThinkPad T430 and everything was correct

Here what i have now:

I've tried everything - upgrading and downgrading drivers (Intel Graphics from Intel, Intel Graphics from Lenovo, Realtek, Lenovo Power Management, BIOS), even reinstalled OS two times.

Of course, I've tried to delete device from system and than run wizard to find mostly appropriate driver by system, tried to disable and then enable this device in Playback Devices menu.

I have even tried to change my power settings and created a new power scheme, but nothing really helped. Only once I heard sound on TV from my laptop when I had deleted device and than install drivers again and did not reboot system. After reboot there was no sound as well.

I wrote to Lenovo support, but they recommend me to apply to the service center all in all. I'm not sure is it wiil be helpful because it seems to be a software problem

What is your processor model number?

Also, run this utility and attach the results:

Oleg Milyukov, Thank you very much for that information. We will do our best to try to fix this problem.

The graphics driver contains updates for 2 different controllers, for video and for audio. When you do the update of the driver, both the video and audio portion should get updated, but sometimes the audio portion does not get updated properly.

We want to confirm if that is the case for this scenario. Please try to install the Intel graphics generic driver version 15.40.38.4963:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27780/Graphics-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-15-40-?product=81497

Once you do that, please enter device manager, select the option "Sound, video and game controllers", right click where it says "Intel® Display Audio" and choose properties, then select the "driver" tab and please let us know the version of the driver.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

@ chezzz: No problem at all. Thank you very much for providing those details.

Just to let you know, the Intel graphics drivers are generic, meaning they might or might not work with your system, the best thing to do will be to install the drivers provided by the manufacturer of the computer, those drivers were customized by Lenovo, in this case, to work with your specific platform.

I verified the drivers that are available in Lenovo's web site, I can see that for graphics there is a driver for Nvidia, please install that driver 23.21.13.8908 and also the Monitor INF File version 6.06:

Please provide the graphics report so we can verify some details about the monitor:

Just to confirm, is this the monitor you are using?

There are several modifications of T440/T440S and some of them have NVidia NVS graphic card on board, but my T440s has Intel graphic card. I suggest that there placed all drivers and user should choose one that he need.

However, I tried to install nvidia drivers firstly in automatic mode and nothing has changed. In manual order it stopped with an error that there is no compatible device

All graphic reports are attached to this message.

I'm using ViewSonic VX2260WM, yes, but also I tried to connect my laptop to Philips 47PFL5038T/60 TV with the same result. Need to say that my old T430 with Intel Graphic Card worked with all connected devices properly, not only mentioned monitor and tv, but plenty of other different devices (I work as an audiovisual engineer and use laptop in work).

Thank you for your help, I really don't know what is wrong with my laptop. Lenovo support had tried to help me, but all of they advices were like "reinstall drivers, if not work bring laptop to service". But if I can hear sound from monitor sometimes it means that all hardware is ok and issue is on software level, I suggest.

Yersterday I tried to install audio drivers manually from the latest Intel driver, and there were two versions - 6.16 and 8.20. When I reinstall from one version to another - it works, but after even changing display mode (from "extension display" to "Only external monitor") the sound from miniDP port disappeared.

chezzz: You are very welcome. Thank you very much for providing those results.

Based on that information and the fact that the problem gets fixed depending on the driver version installed, we can confirm that the issue is not related to the Intel® HD Graphics 4400 controller or to the generic Intel drivers.

So, in this case, what we recommend is to get in contact with Lenovo once again so they can verify if there might be a hardware problem or for them to try to reproduce the issue using the same exact model of computer that you have.

Any questions, please let me know.
