A few years ago, I had installed Win XP on a single hard drive (on the SATA 0 port) and had to tell the Intel Matrix Storage Manager to use Combination mode since I couldn't get the F6 driver to work while doing the install but still had two other hard drives (SATA 2 and SATA3) as part of a RAID1. A couple of nights ago, I used two new hard drives (on SATA 0 and SATA 1) as part of a new RAID1 to install Windows 7 and told BIOS to use RAID hard drive settings instead of Combination, since Windows 7 already had the necessary drivers. While rearranging hard drives, I accidentally plugged in the old Win XP hard drive into the SATA 2 port, so the Intel MSM told me the second RAID needed to be rebuilt. I realized my mistake, so I put the correct hard drive back into the SATA port 2, but the Intel MSM still said it had to be rebuilt. After installing Win 7 on the first RAID, I noticed that the second RAID just showed all unallocated space. I downloaded the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software, and right away, it started rebuilding. After rebuilding (the two hard drives that had already been part of) the second RAID1, I checked and it still looked to just have unallocated space.
I even ran TestDisk, and it didn't find any partitions on either drive. I lost a lot of data. What did I do wrong? What did Intel's Matrix Storage Manager do when it "rebuilt" the drives? I wonder if it called the RAID on SATAs 2 and 3 "Array_0000" before, but then renamed it to "Array_0001" after the new RAID was created on SATAs 0 and 1, which could mean that it's "rebuild" was actually a new create.
Note: The report below shows Array_0000 rebuilding, since I tried putting the Win XP hard drive back in, but it also didn't see anything on the RAID-1 on SATA ports 2 and 3. Miraculously, the RAID-1 on SATA ports 0 and 1 seems to be working fine even though Intel's MSM thought it needed a rebuild after temporarily putting the old hard drive back in SATA port 0.
