Laptop: Dell Precesion 5560
Monitor: Dell 34 inch S3422DWG

Tried with both Dell docking station (DP to HDMI) or anker usb-c to hdmi

Timeline:
-January 10, 2025 monitor works well with Dell docking station setup (DP to HDMI)

-January 11, 2025, received Intel driver updates via Windows updates; monitors were flickering in and out while updates were being applied. Restarted the system to apply updates after EOD. Then shut down after it completed the restart

-January 12, 2025 turn on the computer and the 34-inch monitor can no longer go higher than 1920x1080 resolution

Here are the applied driver updates

Hi, JH_89.

Thank you for posting in our Community.

It seems like the issue with your Dell 34-inch S3422DWG monitor not being able to go higher than 1920x1080 after the Intel driver update may be related to the update itself or how the display is being recognized by the system. Let me see what I can do for you.

Could you confirm which version of the Intel graphics driver was installed before the update on January 11th? You can check the driver version in Device Manager under Display adapters. Did you receive any other updates from Windows Update on January 11th that could have affected display settings, apart from the Intel driver update? When you try to set the resolution higher than 1920x1080, does the display not show the option, or does it show the resolution but not allow you to apply it?

Additionally, I'd like to delve deeper and verify specifics like the graphics models, precise driver versions, and any system errors. Utilizing the Intel SSU tool will enable us to collect detailed information about your system setup, which could aid in identifying the underlying cause of this issue.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Hi VonM_Intel

Here is the SSU result.

All the updates was pushed on January 11th. On January 12th, thats when I noticed my resolution issue.

Then I checked the Dell command update, and updated all available driver updates. I remember there was Nvidia graphics driver on the list of available driver updates, but it did not resolved the issue.

Yesterday, I heard someone from the company who had the same model of the Dell monitor report the same thing. But she was using a Dell Latitude 5420 laptop. Her display issue was resolved after installation of Intel Driver & Support Assistant, they updated the Intel graphics driver using the tool and fixed the resolution issue.

Today, I tried the same approach, updated the Intel Graphics driver, but it did not fix my issue. Nvidia had released a new driver for the T1200, I also installed it, no luck

Dell S3422DWG
2 x HDMI 2.0 (3440 x 1440 @ 100 Hz)
1 x DisplayPort 1.4a HBR3 (3440 x 1440 @ 144 Hz)

According to the user manual, the monitor works with VESA Coordinated Video Timing - Reduced Blanking (CVT-RB).

Dell Precision 5560 - Setup and Specifications
2 x Thunderbolt 4
1 x USB Type-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode

You can use the monitor with all its capabilities (e.g. variable refresh rate - VESA AdaptiveSync) if you connect via the DisplayPort protocol.

  1. Either via the docking station with a DisplayPort cable.

  2. Or directly on the laptop with one of these cables:

Hi MUC,

Thanks for the response. The only weird thing here is that this was all working before the update with my setup.

I have a personal Dell laptop and tried the same monitor and its working well using USB-C to HMDI

For this device combination (Dell Precision 5560 > Dell S3422DWG), a connection with DisplayPort protocol is optimal because it is a "straight" connection.

But of course a USB Type-C to HDMI adapter can also work. If you use a TV, you have no other choice.

Do you have exactly the same USB-C to HDMI solution at home and at work? Background: With USB Type-C, a DisplayPort signal is always output. This must be converted to the HDMI protocol. Adapters (in cables and docking stations) therefore almost certainly contain a protocol converter (PCON) chip for these requirements (4K TV). This is a possible source of error. Such problems are often difficult to isolate to one device; they are often compatibility issues in a device combination or signal chain.

For example, I know that this USB-C to HDMI cable works reliably up to 8K @ 60 Hz because I have tested it myself on current Nvidia and Intel graphics cards. It contains the Synaptics VMM7100 PCON chip, for which the manufacturer Cable Matters also regularly offers firmware updates.

Can you provide a link to the products you use (personally and at work)?

For this troubleshooting, I am using the same USB-C to HDMI adapter and the same HDMI cable.

Here is the link of that adapter
Anker USB C Hub Adapter, 5-in-1 USB C Adapter with 4K USB C to HDMI, Ethernet Port, 3 USB 3.0 Ports, for MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, XPS, Pixelbook, and More : Amazon.ca: Electronics

I don't think the issue is the docking or adapters I am using. Because prior to the intel update, everything is working fine.

I'm not sure if the driver is caching my monitor to limit the resolution size.

Regardless of what I use (dell docking or USB-C to HDMI) I cannot go above 1920x1080

Yes, I believe you when you say it worked before an update and was software related. Since I can't judge the list of driver updates above for possible influences on this issue, we have to try to analyze the current situation of the graphics driver and find out what causes it to only offer 1080p @ 60 Hz as maximum resolution. So two questions:

  1. What resolution and refresh rate were you able to set before? Please state the exact values that you expected or were used to.
  2. Please create a Report for Intel Graphics Drivers and attach the output file here. This report will also contain the raw data that the graphics driver receives from the adapter. I will analyze the data.

Hi All,

Just to update you guys.

I was able to get it working after replacing the DP-HDMI cable with DP-DP cable.

It seems that there is an issue with HDMI resolution from the driver currently installed on my laptop. Not being able to recognize the full resolution of my wide monitor

For now I will stick to the DP-DP cable for my wide monitor.

I want to clarify that the DP-HDMI cable was working prior to the driver updates I received. The DP-HDMI is still working with my Personal Dell Computer but does not have a dedicated video card and works well with my 34 wide monitor.
