Watch Dogs Legion DirectX 12 in Iris Plus graphics glitch

Watch Dogs Legion running running with DirectX 12 on the GPD Win Max, which has an Iris Plus on a i5-1035G7.

The menu and 2D UI elements are ok, but the 3D world has this issue.

This is with driver 27.20.100.9466. But revious drivers had the same issue anyway.

Using the DirectX 11 engine has no such problem, but the performance is much lower.

PDD, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In order for us to provide the most accurate assistance on this topic, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your system:

What is the model of the motherboard?

If this is a laptop, what is the model of it?

Is this a new computer?

Was it working fine before?

When did the issue start?

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes?

Which Windows* version are you using?

Does the problem happen at home or work environment?

Does the problem happen just with Watch Dogs Legion only or with all the games?

Please attach the SSU report so we can verify further details about the components in your platform, please check all the options in the report including the one that says "3rd party software logs":

It's on the GPD Win Max laptop https://gpd.hk/gpdwinmax which has a Iris Plus on a i5-1035G7.

With the game set to use DirectX 12, the issue has been always there since the first time I run the game. There's no such problem with using DirectX 11, but the performance is much lower.

It's currently running on Windows 10 20H2 19042.928, but the issue exists with earlier versions of Windows too.

I have only see this issue with Watch Dogs Legion, not in any other games.

SSU.txt report attached.

Thanks!

So I managed to test it on a laptop with an Intel HD 630 graphics. When using DirectX 12, i get the exact same color problem. So it looks like this is not a GPD Win Max specific bug. Maybe it is across all Intel graphics? Hopefully that would make testing and fixing this easier.

Thanks again!

PDD, Thank you very much for providing that information and the reports.

Based on the information showing in the SSU report, we can confirm that the graphics driver currently installed is version 27.20.100.9466, which is the latest Intel® Generic Graphics driver available on our website:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/30381/Intel-Graphics-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers

We always recommend to install the graphics driver provided by the manufacturer of the computer, since that driver was customized by them to work with your specific platform.

I looked on GPD's website and it seems they have a driver package to install, did you try to install that driver package?

Did you check with them directly which is the graphics driver version tested and validated by them?

https://www.gpd.hk/gpdwinmaxfirmware

We also suggest to get in contact directly with them to gather the instructions on how to do a BIOS update and make sure the BIOS version installed in your computer is the latest. Once you get the chance, please let us know the results:

Hi there.

Thanks for looking into this. But like I've mentioned in the follow up reply, I tested it on a completely different laptop with an Intel HD 630 graphics, and it is having the exact same issue. So it feels like it is not laptop specific. Are you able to test the game on any Intel graphics with DirectX 12 and see if you get the same problem?

Thanks again.

Hi there. It's fixed in the latest beta driver 27.20.100.9616, not sure when it will become a release driver though, but you can still give that a try if you want.

It can be downloaded here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/30500

Hello PDD, I just received an update on this matter.

We will try to reproduce the issue in our Intel® Lab, in order for us to be able to do that, could you please provide a video or a detailed description of the steps that you followed that shows the issue? This is for us to make sure we are doing the same exact process that you are doing.

Hi.

As far as I can tell there's not really any special steps.

You install and run the game, go into Options -> Videos. Make sure Video Adapter is set to use your Intel GPU. Also under Quality make sure it is set to use DirectX 12 (I think it's the default).

Then play the game from "Campaign", "New Game". Once you're in the actual 3D game world you should see the problem.

Thanks again!

Hi @PDD

Can you try installing our Beta driver 27.20.100.9616 and try to reproduce the issue?

Hi there!

The good news. The beta driver has fixed the color problem on DirectX12!

But now that I can actually test more under DirectX12, I found a few minor issues. Not sure if that is something you could follow up.

I've captured a video showing one of the issues. The game has this feature called Temporal Upscaling. When set to non-100%, it increases the performance quite a bit. But under Intel and DirectX12, it sometimes causeing this artifact on objects. If I adjust this settings again, it *may* fix it.

Another things I've seen is sometimes texture is incorrect or missing. Like the building on the maps are all missing.

Anyway thanks again!
