dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Here is a video demonstrating Display Setting Freeze:

Another video showing dGPU switch on a lot of simple tasks:

Another one:

We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.

  • NVIDIA driver
  • Chipset driver
  • BIOS
  • Firmware

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer. The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless! So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,

Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).

After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.

This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.

Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.

.:Bryce:.

Really? Really? I mean really?

Come on guys. The latest driver already solves the right click. But we are not just talking about the right click. The problem is more severe. Do us a favor and read the first post, please.

Has anyone tried the latest windows insider build and see if the issue is resolved?

I wouldnt mind doing that as a temporary fix or going back to windows 1703 if that will fix the issue

The bad news is that it does say "if all goes well we will issue an update on March/April". So this eta is if all goes well. My concern is that until now they should have released a new beta version(other than fixong the right click) to test with users that everything is almost ok in order to proceed to final version. My guess is that the update will take longer to arrive but i hope i m wrong

I m suprised that this hasnt got enough attention. We are talking about thousands of users having this issue. Users bought powerful laptops which for daily tasks behave like intel pentium. There should be an official announcment or warning when trying to buy any affected laptop. The fact that new drivers are released and this issue is not resolved it means that either they cant fix it or it is their least priority at the moment.

We got a new driver. Could you please give it a try:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~michaeldd/Intel%20HD%20&%20Iris%20Graphics%20Drivers%20Version%2023.20.16.4973%20WHQL.rar http://members.iinet.net.au/~michaeldd/Intel%20HD%20&%20Iris%20Graphics%20Drivers%20Version%2023.20.16.4973%20WHQL.rar

// I tried myself and no new change.

I would like to explain something about the issue:

Intel was able to fix the right click issue because they have control over their EXE to wheter call the dGPU or the iGPU. So, I believe it is up to Microsoft to fix the calls that are being made to dGPU. They need to update the OS to make all the calls to the iGPU.

I bought my device on February 2017. I have created the Microsoft thread one June 2017. It has been a year and we are still literally nowhere. I really wonder what are all those manufacturers doing when their customers complain about the issue.

This is the result of monopoly. I said it many times and I will say it again: the day macOS comes to PCs, Microsoft is done.

I mean what is this, really? There are now more than 1300 people who just clicked on the "I have the same question" button on Microsoft forums.

Same for me. The new WHQL driver only fixes the right click, other issues like clicking the battery icon or opening mozilla/chrome are still there. (For Dell 15 Inspiron 7577)

No idea but as far as it's not on the Intel's Download section, take it as a beta...

Has Bryce from intel informed about this beta? Will we be informed of a new release or is just a trial and error procedure?

I was informed about the first leaked driver which fixed the right click issue. But not about the second one. I've found it in the same directory with the first leaked one.

You are welcome.

BTW, the latest driver was actually pushed to Windows Update! And one of the users on our website claims that it fixed all the problems for him. I've installed the same driver and see no change. Could you guys also please install and report back?

I installed the latest driver that was linked a few posts earlier (23.20.16.4973) and the problem still exists. (Win 10 Pro X64 Build 16299.251 on a Dell Inspiron 7567 with i7 7700HQ + GTX1050Ti 4GB)

I replaced my Windows 10 1709 with the recommended version and build. The freeze problem exists when UAC dims desktop (Which I disabled it now), but otherwise it's been working fine

All of the Settings, drivers' versions and softwares are the same. Driver version for Intel HD 630 in particular, is 15.60.2.4901

Hi All~

I will report additional problem related with GPU switch and freeze.

I have Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming 7577(i7) with problem.

I found that the CPU clock is over 1.5 Ghz when the laptop is idle.

I checked other 3 normal laptop(2 MSI, 1 Dell - All i7) without problem.

The CPU clock is under 1 GHz when the laptop is idle.

There is over 0.5 Ghz Gap between normal and problem.

It means that the normal laptop will save the power.

The Power plan settings of All laptops are "Balanced" option.

Thank you.

Hi bluesky09, I have the same notebook Inspiron Gaming 7577 and mine is at 0.9-1 Ghz when idle. (Using battery and battery saver mode) Are you sure that you have this issue when you are switched to battery saver mode ?

Really???

I unpluged and I changed to battery saver mode. but the CPU clock marks over 1.2 GHz.

I just install Windows 10 pro 1709 and MS Office 2010 only.

My Dell inspiron 7577 has Intel Core i7-7700HQ @ 2.80 GHz and GeForce GTX 1060 with Max-Q Design.

I just upgrade BIOS from Dell support site and the other drivers also installed from dell site.

What is wrong with me???

I will clean install and check again util this week.

Most probably a process is causing this. Check with process explorer or event viewer to see if something is causing the high cpu frequency. Also try to not use the dell software for battery management or try to use it and see what works best. I will also check my laptop. I have formated it once i bought it , removed all partitions and started fresh
