dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Here is a video demonstrating Display Setting Freeze:

Another video showing dGPU switch on a lot of simple tasks:

Another one:

We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer. The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless! So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,

Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).

After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.

This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.

Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.

.:Bryce:.

No that's not a solution!!! I have tried it, too! The only hope right now is intel's new update!

I installed intel graphics driver ver 23.20.16.4933 and Nvidia driver ver. 390.77. This combination seems to work for me...it got rid of all stuttering. (Asus GL503VD - GTX 1050). Can someone verify by trying it out?

Here is the driver link for those that are interested:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2018/02/3aeb69b8-ed7f-42f1-827c-8f5fe19c6750_26ac6f4a77123c1e904ea5635054f98d5e0e62b8.cab http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2018/02/3aeb69b8-ed7f-42f1-827c-8f5fe19c6750_26ac6f4a77123c1e904ea5635054f98d5e0e62b8.cab

Installed just fine after unzipping the file into a folder, going to device manager, and using the "have disk" method to install the driver.

Dell Inspiron Gaming 7577 with the I5 7300HQ.

Nope it didn't fix it, I'm pretty sure I also tried this driver not long ago.

Problem still exists. Seemed a little better at first but looks like it was just a placebo effect.

Same happened to me.

Installed driver 23.20.16.4933, tried a youtube video fullscreen and it worked!

Second time, it freezed.

And now freezes always, at around 3 seconds after the video is maximized.

Latest driver for Intel HD Graphics 630 is Version 22.20.16.4836. Intel's Driver and Support Assistant doesn't work for me for some reason so I can't check on possible updates through that. Checked my laptops driver page (Inspiron 7577) and it refers to Version 22.20.16.4836 as the latest one out at the moment.

The latest driver is 4901(https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/98909/Intel-HD-Graphics-630 Downloads for Intel® HD Graphics 630 ) for me ( lenovo y520 i5 7300HQ Kaby Lake & GTX 1060 6go ) on the intel website and 390.77 NVIDIA .

I find the 23.20.16.4933 and y test this and ... the driver is not compatible for my laptop.

What is your configuration? and how did you install it?

Thank's

No. There is currently no driver that solves the issue. After you update the driver, freeze might go away for some time but it is there. Wait for the March release!

I registrated here only because of this bug. Same here on a new Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-51-536M). The only workaround is to let the dGPU in idle. Please fix this soon.

Something is very strange. Even on a clean install of windows (build 16299.214) , i dont have the issue anymore? Any thoughts on how this could happen?

I've been using this installation for almost 48 hrs now, still no issues.

Can someone tell me a definitive way to reproduce the problem? I know i had the issue a few days back, but i just cant reproduce it.

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel
  2. Desktop > Show GPU activity in system tray
  3. Cehck if there is an app using the dGPU.

Bet you didn't even install NVIDIA driver

Nvidia driver is installed and system tray show gpu activity is enabled. Nothing is using the dgpu.

I returned a Powerspec laptop last week coz of the stutter thing, i thought the laptop gpu was defective. Then i bought this Asus GL503, and realized the same issue was present....which is why i searched, found this forum, and posted here. And all of a sudden this issue disappears after driving me mad for 4 days. Anyways, if the issue returns i will be mention it back here.
