dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.

 

 

  • Intel driver
  • NVIDIA driver
  • Chipset driver
  • BIOS
  • Firmware

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer.The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless!So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,

Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).

After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.

This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.

Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.

Hello Everyone,

The update I can provide at this point is that our debug team has been able to reproduce this issue, and they are currently investigating what is the root cause.

I would also like to apologize for the late reply. Our resources were focused on some critical issues (e.g. BSOD, crashes), and had to put this on a lower priority for a while. However, we acknowledge that this is extremely important as well, thus the priority of this bug report has been raised, so I'm hoping news come out faster from now on.

Same problem here with my new Gigabyte Aero15W.

I've partially solved the problem by switching off Nvidia Optimus or by plugin an external monitor 😮

I'm really thinking to return my (expensive) product 😕

I am experiencing this issue on my XMG A517-dnj (i7 7700HQ, GTX 1060), too. If there is anything we could do (e.g. provide system information) to speed things up, please let me know.

I know it is not the definitive solution but I am using this method based on the deactivation and activation of nvidia device via shortcuts on the desktop.

First you have to download the devcon.rar (devcon its a microsoft software to get access in device manager via shell).

Then copy devcon32 and devcon64 to the folder c: \ windows \ system32

Then identifying the id number of the nvidia card as shown in this image,

with this id you have to edit the two .bat that brings the rar , then copy the two shortcuts where you want,

So every time I want play something I start the nvidia card and when I finish the deactivate again.

Sorry about my english. BTW, i have windows 10 1709 last drivers intel and nvidia.

Thanks for this tip, but it is not the solution.

Anyway my MSI is under warranty, I will see what it has to say about this problem, because I will not admit excuses that is from MIcrosoft, Intel, Nvidia ... will have to admit that there are problems, even if they are of Software.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with my Acer VN7-793G equipped with i7 Kaby Lake, Intel HD 630 + GeForce 1060. When using 1703 (Creators Update) the problem doesn't occur. After updating to Build 1709 (Fall Creators Update) the problem is presented. The laptop is totally unusable, moving mouse pointer makes it laggy, listening to music/watching movies, playing games.

Right now the only solution is to roll back to Creators Update Build (1703) and wait for a proper fix. It seems the problem have existed for a long period of time and no proper solution was presented. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that spending 1500 euros for a laptop doesn't guarantee anything.

I can confirm that on 1703 build there is only freeze on the battery icon click and on volume slider... battery icon freeze happens to me only after initial boot...

I litteraly bought the laptop today and its a beast.. 7700hq, nvme ssd, 8gb ram and gtx 1050 but this kind of issue is getting me to think will I return it tomorrow even though I fixed it lets say 70%.... but honestly, who knows what will hapen tomorrow or the day after since people are complaining about the same thing for more then they should- 1-1,5 years....

microsoft intel and nvidia should sort this stuff out or they will lose many customers...

From the device manager, enter the PCI Express x16 Controller features. Enter driver update. Click Scan my computer for driver software. Click Allow me to select from a list of available drivers on my computer. The issue of installing PCI-PCI bridge from the list is solved.

Hello everyone, i found new way to the right mouse click problem without using the registry hack.

Download ShellExView, extract and execute.

Next click on find, and search for Intel

Now disables the following itens:

Restart your computer.

It's not a correction, but for now is the best solution.
