B580 performance drops during streaming or coding

My pc lags hard and I have problem even moving my mouse when streaming anything on Discord. I also notice very often that my vs code is visually stuck, like I'm typing and the app is stuck only visually, it does register my keystrokes and I can move the app and see the scrollbar in the app move before I can see the app refreshed and updated.

  • I did do DDU, and even tried reinstalling a clean version of Windows.
  • My driver version: 32.0.101.6913
  • My setup: Ryzen 5 5600X, 32gb 3600Mhz, B580, MSI B550-A Pro

You can find attached intel ssu report and CapFrameX capture (converted it to .txt) of me starting a league of legends game then stream on Discord.

Hi tgLoki,

Thank you for posting in our Community and for sharing a clear description of the issue you're experiencing. I appreciate the steps you've already taken, such as performing a clean install of Windows and using DDU. Those are excellent initial troubleshooting steps. From what you’ve described, it appears the performance drops might be related to GPU resource contention, possibly during video encoding/decoding or graphics acceleration, particularly since the issue appears most prominently during Discord streaming and while using VS Code. To further investigate, I’d like to ask a few clarifying questions and suggest a few next steps:

  • When the lag occurs during Discord streaming, is video camera sharing or screen sharing enabled, or both?
  • Does the issue persist when you're not running Discord, such as just using VS Code or streaming with a different platform like OBS or Zoom?
  • Do you have any background applications running (e.g., monitoring software, overlays, antivirus) that may consume GPU or CPU resources?
  • Could you confirm whether Resizable BAR is enabled or disabled in BIOS?
  • Do you experience similar lag when streaming or working in windowed mode versus fullscreen?
  • Were there any recent hardware or software changes made before the issue occurred?

I’ll take a closer look at the files you’ve provided, including the SSU and CapFrameX logs, to correlate any performance spikes or anomalies during your workload.

Have a nice day!

Thank you! Let me start by answering your questions

  • During Discord streaming I am sharing my screen, otherwise I wouldn't be streaming. I didn't quite understand your question.
  • When I'm not streaming, I don't have lags or major performance issues, although I'm still experiencing worse gaming performance that I had with an older card (Amd RX 6600) which is supposed to perform worse than Intel's B580.
  • I don't have any monitoring or analysis apps running in the background. I do have Riot Vanguard running, but closing it didn't help.
  • Resizable Bar is enabled in BIOS, and it also confirms it in Intel's app.
  • Same lag and fps drops/occasional freezing.
  • I always had this issue since I first installed the card. I did try changing motherboard to a newer model (from B450 to B550), but nothing.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and helping me, looking forward to finding a solution as I hate not being able to stream my favorite games to my friends on Discord.

Hello tgLoki,

Thank you for your detailed reply and for taking the time to answer each question. I now have a much clearer picture of the issue. Based on your explanation, it sounds like the system performs adequately during normal gameplay, but lags, stutters, or freezes when screen sharing via Discord, despite having an Intel® Arc B580 card, which should outperform your previous AMD RX 6600.

To help resolve the issue, please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Open Discord:
    • Launch the Discord application on your computer.
  2. Access User Settings:
    • Click on the gear icon located at the bottom left corner of the Discord window, next to your username. This will open the User Settings menu.
  3. Navigate to Advanced Settings:
    • In the User Settings menu, scroll down and click on the "Advanced" option under the "App Settings" section.
  4. Disable Hardware Acceleration:
    • In the Advanced settings, you will see an option labeled "Hardware Acceleration." Toggle the switch to the off position to disable GPU acceleration.
  5. Restart Discord:
    • After disabling Hardware Acceleration, you will need to restart the Discord application for the changes to take effect. Click "Okay" when prompted to restart.

NoteDisabling GPU acceleration may result in a slight decrease in performance, particularly in rendering animations and transitions within the Discord application. This is because the application will rely more on the CPU rather than the GPU for these tasks. By turning off GPU acceleration, the GPU will have more available resources for other tasks, which can be beneficial if you are running multiple GPU-intensive applications simultaneously. Additionally, GPU acceleration can sometimes cause instability in applications, especially if there are compatibility issues with the graphics driver or if the GPU is under heavy load. Disabling this feature can help improve the stability of Discord, reducing the likelihood of crashes while streaming, If Discord is crashing while streaming, it could be due to conflicts between the GPU acceleration and other processes or applications running on your system. Disabling GPU acceleration is a common troubleshooting step to isolate and resolve such issues.

Please let me know if the issue persists so I can continue with the next steps in troubleshooting

I did as instructed, but when streaming my screen my mouse is stuttering and my PC feels like it's running at 5 or 10fps. Very laggy.

Hello tgLoki,

Thank you for your update and for following the instructions provided. I’m sorry to hear that you're experiencing severe lag and stuttering during screen streaming. That definitely shouldn’t be happening.

I will need to do further research on this matter and post the response on this thread once available.

Hello tgLoki,

Thank you for your patience, and I sincerely apologize for the long wait. I understand how important this issue is to you, and I truly appreciate the time you’ve allowed us to carefully review your concern. The delay was to ensure that we could provide you with a more accurate and comprehensive solution.

Based on our investigation, we recommend installing the latest Intel® Graphics driver, version 32.0.101.7028. Before proceeding with the installation, please perform a clean driver installation using the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) tool to remove any remnants of previous drivers. After that, install the new driver version.
