Company of Heroes 2 Graphics bug

Dear Intel Arc support team!

When i'm playing Company of Heroes 2, after 15-30 minutes, the textures stretch on random parts of the map. Several Arc users reported this months ago, and looks like its still not fixed. I would like to ask the support to investigate this issue, and try to help us Company of Heroes 2 players to fix this, because this is really annoying.

Since people already reported this issue earlier, i'm going to link that post: https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-ARC-Graphics/Game-objects-stretch-and-cover-the-whole-screen-using-Arc-B580/m-p/1692339

I have exactly the same issue, i have the newest drivers, tried different graphics settings, nothing helped, i'm sure its a software side problem.

I'll attach the SSU, and a picture of the problem. As the other Arc users who suffer from this graphics bug, i tried all the troubleshoot methods, for example lowering graphics settings, updating bios, updating graphics driver, lowering FPS, basically everything that might have helped, but the bug still occurs after 15-30 minutes.

Please help us Arc users, who would like to play this old, but amazing game!

Thank you very much for your help!

Hello @NagyAkos512,

Thank you for taking the time to run such detailed tests and for sharing your observations. The information you provided about the different maps, settings, and comparisons with the RX460 is extremely helpful. We attempted to reproduce the issue internally, but were unable to encounter the same artifacts you described. Based on your latest findings, it seems the issue may occur under specific conditions, such as higher graphics settings, certain maps, and possibly how the shader cache interacts with the game engine.

To help us narrow this down further, could you please share the following:

  • The exact in-game graphics settings you used when the issue appeared.

  • Any configuration file modifications (such as ShaderQuality changes) you made.

  • Screenshots or short video clips of the artifacts, if possible.

Additionally, as a precautionary step, could you confirm the exact driver version you tested with? Also, have you had the chance to perform a clean driver uninstall using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) before reinstalling the latest driver version 30.0.101.7028? This step helps rule out any leftover files or corrupted shader cache that might be contributing to the problem. Your collaboration and willingness to investigate further with the community are greatly appreciated. Please continue to share any new findings.

Best regards,

Hey VonM!

I'm very sorry for the late reply, I had a busy weekend and I didn't have time to test and investigate further.

My game settings are everything on the highest, but anti-alising is OFF, and vSync is also OFF, resolution is 2560x1440 120hz. With these settings, I often encountered the artifacts, lowering the graphics seemed to help, especially turning down the texture detail option to the lowest. As far as i know, if you turn down the graphics, the game automatically switches to DX9, which seems to solve this very weird graphical artifact.

The game has two different graphics related config file, one in the documents folder, and one in the game's folder. The game folder version is where I "messed" a little with the configfile. My ShaderQuality was set to 0, than I switched it to 2. TerrainDetail was -499, which I don't even understand but I changed it to 2. After this my game looked really bad, but I didn't encounter any artifacts.

I also tried to use the game's optimize my device option, after this the game gives you a settings preset which is compatible with your system. Sadly, this didn't help either.

As of now, the only solution for me is to crank down the graphics settings to the lowest, and even re-write the game's configfile graphics options. With these, I managed to play for 40 minutes and an hour long match without any issues. I also tried a 4vs4 on a huge map, I went AFK for 2 hours, and the game was still stable.

Monkiemurdie and myself came to the conclusion that its happening because of a corrupted 3D model. We are not sure which one, but it seems logical that a 3D model causes this. After 15-45 minutes is where the artifacts happening, so it might be a unit, a vehicle, a building that causes this issue, thats why its hard to reproducate in our opinion. However, these are just speculations, we are amateurs in this, trying to help you to solve this issue, not easy haha!

My current driver version is the latest WHQL driver which is 30.0.101.7026. AFAIK Monkiemurdie already tested the latest version, but he didn't report back any success. Myself already tried the latest version, which didn't solve this issue, so i reverted back to the latest WHQL driver for stability reasons. I did not use DDU the last time I updated the drivers, I used Intel's clean install feature. This should wipe out all the remaining shader cache, right?

As of now i'm away from my PC, I'll be able to attach the requestes files later on today. I would like to apologize for the late answer, school season started, its been a busy first weekend. Thank you for your understanding!

Thank you VonM for your efforts, I hope your weekend was great! I'll continue to investigate further and I'll attach the requested files later on today. I'm really grateful for your help!

Hello @NagyAkos512,

Thank you for the detailed update and for taking the time to share all your findings. I can see you’ve already done a great deal of testing and troubleshooting on your end. No worries at all about the delay; I completely understand how busy things can get.

I’ll need to conduct some additional research on this issue to ensure we cover all possible angles. Once I have more information, I’ll post an update in this thread so we can continue narrowing this down together. In the meantime, I appreciate your patience and all the effort you’ve put into helping diagnose the problem.

Best regards,

Hey VonM!

I attached my Company of Heroes 2 configuration files, maybe you can find something useful inside these files, or try to insert this into your game's folder, and try the game with these settings. Generally speaking, these settings along with lower graphics seems to help to reduce the numbers of the artifacts appearing.

I also attach a picture of the issue again, unfortunately i don't have time right now because of school to reproduce the artifact myself, so i asked another B580 to play the game for 15-45 minutes, and if an artifact appears, take a screenshot and upload it. I attached this picture.

If i find anything more useful, or investigate something, i'll report back as soon as possible VonM!

Thank you very much for your help!

Have a nice day,

Ákos

PS: I put the pictures and the config files into a Zip file.

Hello @NagyAkos512,

Thank you for sharing the configuration files, screenshots, and additional details. I’ve replicated the issue again using the same settings you provided, but unfortunately, I was not able to reproduce the artifacts on my end and still didn't see the same result of the issue.

At this point, it’s possible that the issue may be linked to the operating system. To help us rule this out, could you please perform a clean reinstallation of your operating system and then test the game again? This step will allow us to confirm whether the artifacts are system-related or if we need to continue investigating other factors.

Please let me know once you’ve had the chance to try this, and if the issue persists, feel free to share any new findings. I’ll be more than happy to continue working with you to resolve this.

Thank you again for your patience and cooperation.

Best regards,

Hello VonM!

To be honest right now i won't be able to reinstall my whole operating system, sadly school takes all my time and to re-download everything, would take a century with my internet connection.

Windows 11 is known for its poor gaming compatibility and performance, so i wouldn't be surprised if the OS mess up something. However, since many B580 users reported exactly the same issue, i'm not certain that the OS causes this graphical artifacts. Maybe a whole OS reinstall would fix this issue by deleting hidden cache, shader cache files, directX reinstall, etc etc. But for one single game, i would rather don't reinstall my whole OS. This graphical artifacts are really weird, very hard to make them appear, you have to wait wait, sometimes after 15 minutes sometimes after 45-50 minutes, than they appear on our screen. I reported an issue before in a game called uBoat, and one of your moderator managed to replicate the issue instantly but thats because that glitch was much much easier to replicate, this is really hard i understand VonM and i would like to thank you for your efforts and time you put into testing.

I'm not sure how to continue, MonkieMurdie and another B580 user and myself are in contact, we tried different methods, driver versions, tricks, config file changes, we managed to lower the number of these artifact appearings, but sadly they are inevitable, and appear still enough time to ruin our gaming experience.

Its sad because otherwise i really love this GPU, i only had issues in uBoat but in that game your moderator already replicated the issue and a fix is on its way, this graphical glitch in Company of Heroes 2, and Hunt: Showdown 1896 shader cache corruption, everything else works perfectly.

I'll promise you that if the Arc B770 comes out, and i manage to get one in my PC, i'll do a clean OS install. Hopefully that or the new card's design/driver fixes this issue.

May i ask you, can we keep this thread open please? So i can report back if my B580 friends find anything useful. Thank you very much for your efforts and time VonM! I'm really grateful.

Have a nice day!

Ákos

Hello @NagyAkos512,

Thank you so much for your detailed message. I completely understand how challenging it can be to juggle school and the time commitment required for a full OS reinstall, especially with your current internet situation. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences with us. It’s great to know that you're actively working with MonkieMurdie and other B580 users to test different solutions, even though the graphical artifacts are proving to be elusive and difficult to reproduce consistently. I agree, these intermittent issues can be especially tricky to resolve. Absolutely, we can keep this thread open. Feel free to share any new findings from your testing or your friends’ experiences. I’m more than happy to continue assisting and monitoring your case.

Thank you once again for your patience, cooperation, and kind words.

Best regards,

Hi VonM!

Sorry for not reporting back, as I wrote earlier the only solution looks like to be a complete OS reinstall, but its school time for me now and I barely have any free time, and an OS reinstall would take days since redownloading my games would be a headache because of my slow internet connection.

As we talked about this earlier in this thread, I would like to ask you VonM to keep this thread open, so that if anyone else have this issue and manage to solve it, can report it here along with a solution.

In the meantime when I'll have free time, I will continue to investigate this further, but as of now I would like to ask for your patience and kindly ask you to keep this thread open. If monitoring takes your resources, I absolutely understand that, feel free to focus on other people's reports.

Thank you very much for your help and efforts and i'm really grateful for your understanding! I wish I met more people like you in customer service, the way you talked to me and was understanding all the time was a really good experience. 10/10 customer service you have!

I wish you a pleasent day VonM!

Best regards,

Ákos

Hello @NagyAkos512,

Thank you for the update and for confirming you’re willing to try a full OS reinstall when time allows. I completely understand the download/headache constraints with slow internet, that’s a sensible reason to wait.

Two quick notes:

  • I recommend contacting the game developer as well, they can often provide the most accurate, game-specific troubleshooting or patches that could resolve this without a full reinstall.

  • To avoid confusion and duplicate reports in the forum, I will close this thread for now. If you (or anyone else) find a solution or have further questions, please open a new thread, we’ll pick it up there right away.

Thank you for your cooperation, patience, and your very kind words, it means a lot. If you want me to reopen the case later, just let me know.

Wishing you an easy school term and faster downloads soon.

Best regards,
