Dead Island 2 STILL unplayable

First attempt at getting this resolved

My PC had some hardware issues that came first, but as the title says, DI2 is unplayable.

I'm getting maybe 5-10 fps on ultra low settings, creating a blurry mess, with a B580, a Ryzen 5 7600, and 32 GB of DDR5 Ram.

I've done all the suggested steps, my drivers are up-to-date (32.0.101.6653).

Okay, I've done all of the following:

  • Used Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode to remove existing graphics drivers before installing the latest Intel driver.

  • Performed a clean installation of the latest Intel graphics driver (version 32.0.101.6732 or newer).

  • Ensured that Resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory) and "Decode 4G" are enabled in the BIOS.

  • (Not possible) Tested the Intel Arc B580 GPU in a different system to rule out hardware issues.

  • Disabled AMD integrated graphics in the BIOS.

  • Performed a clean OS installation (as a last resort).

  • Disabled "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" in Windows settings.

  • Set the Windows Power Plan to "Best Performance".

  • Verified that the PSU is at least 600W.

  • Reinstalled the game to rule out installation-related issues.

  • Reset any overclocking settings in the Intel Graphics software to default.

  • Used CapFrameX to capture performance data for analysis.

But none of these worked. What finally made a difference was:

I disabled integrated graphics in the BIOS and changed the PCIe slot setting from "Auto" to "GEN4". I believe these two changes, along with disabling Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, had the most significant impact. I went from 18 FPS to 170–190 FPS on high settings.

Cheers! ARc b580 really awesome card!

Hello, TheKrueg.

Thank you for confirming the BIOS adjustment and for providing such a detailed breakdown of your experience. It's clear you've invested time and effort into isolating the issue. Your observation about the performance inconsistency between low and medium settings is insightful, and it's not uncommon in certain game engines where rendering pipelines behave differently at varying levels of detail. The fact that medium settings outperform low suggests that the game may rely on specific hardware features or optimizations that are inadvertently throttled or mismanaged at lower presets.

In response to your question about Intel graphics optimization, I will need to conduct further investigation. I’ll be sure to provide an update in this thread as soon as I have more detailed information to share on the matter.

Hello, TheKrueg.

Thank you once again for your patience and collaboration as we work through this issue. To further support your case, we’ve conducted an additional set of comprehensive tests using a comparable AMD-based platform (Ryzen 7700X + Intel® Arc™ B580 + driver version 32.0.101.6739) in order to rule out any potential driver compatibility issues.

We tested the game at 1080p under both Low and Medium graphics presets, and observed strong performance throughout. After three test runs for each setting, we recorded the following average frame rates:

  • 1080p and Low presets: average FPS = 192.4
  • 1080p and Medium presets: average FPS = 178.4

For transparency and deeper insight, I’ve attached the CapFrameX performance logs from these tests. Additionally, a video recording of the performance test is available here: Performance Test Video

Upon reviewing your CapFrameX data alongside ours, we observed two key discrepancies:

  1. The average "CPU load %" is significantly lower: 9% on the affected system compared to 35% on our test system, indicating a potential CPU bottleneck affecting the GPU.

  2. The average "GPU power" appears to be limited: 21W on the affected B580 GPU versus 114W on our B580 GPU, suggesting a possible GPU power issue.

Therefore, we recommend, if feasible, testing the B580 GPU in a different system to rule out any hardware issues. Additionally, please ensure that the Resizable BAR (or Smart Access Memory) and "Decode 4G" options are enabled in the BIOS.

As a final resort, we suggest disabling the AMD integrated graphics in the BIOS and performing a clean OS installation to eliminate any potential software conflicts.

Ryzen 7700X

I'm using a Ryzen 7600.

The average "GPU power" appears to be limited: 21W on the affected B580 GPU versus 114W on our B580 GPU, suggesting a possible GPU power issue.

That doesn't make sense. There are literally no issues on other games with the B580.

Additionally, please ensure that the Resizable BAR (or Smart Access Memory) and "Decode 4G" options are enabled in the BIOS.

Can confirm.

Testing the B580 GPU in another system is not feasible, I don't have another system that can support it. If you could please do some testing using the same CPU, it would be appreciated.

As a final resort, we suggest disabling the AMD integrated graphics in the BIOS and performing a clean OS installation to eliminate any potential software conflicts.

The integrated graphics are disabled, but I'm not going to do a clean wipe just yet.

Hello, TheKrueg.

Thank you for the detailed input. It's been very helpful in narrowing down the issue. The GPU power discrepancy you noted is certainly unusual, but may reflect a workload-specific interaction, which can occur even when performance is otherwise stable. I appreciate your confirmation of key BIOS settings and understand the limitations around further hardware testing. Given that, I’ll aim to replicate the issue internally using a Ryzen 7600 for alignment. As for the suggestion of a clean OS installation, I respect your decision to defer this step. While I typically recommend it as a last resort for eliminating low-level software conflicts or registry corruption, I agree it makes sense to exhaust all other avenues before taking that route. However, as I mentioned earlier that we suggest performing a clean OS installation to eliminate any potential software conflicts.

In the meantime, I'll need to conduct some additional investigation and will provide an update in this thread as soon as more detailed information becomes available. I appreciate your patience in this matter.

Hello, TheKrueg.

Thank you for your continued patience. Following my investigation, current findings indicate that this performance issue is unlikely to be solely attributed to the CPU in question. As a precautionary measure, I will keep the support thread open to monitor for any similar reports from other users that may help identify a broader trend.

In the meantime, I continue to recommend performing a clean operating system installation to help isolate potential software or configuration variables. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you observe any changes or have additional data to share.

Hi i'm new at this forum. I had the same problem with the same game

Current build

R7 7700X

Cougar Gold 850w

Arc b580 12 gb

Asus tuf 650

Alredy made everything this thread says, from deactivating thing in widows to deactivate everything related in the bios. But i still have like 18-25 FPS on really low settings. This does not happen when playing oblivion, im having like 70/80 fps on ultra 1080.

Yes i have used the ddu and made a clean install of the latest driver.

Is there any form to play the game on Vulkan?

This didn't even work when I installed the card into a new system. Disabling integrated graphics is the only way to force the game to use the Intel Arc B580. That's why I marked what @AnaSedurmio did as the solution. Uninstalling the OS is a waste of time.

Hi @TheKrueg,

Thank you for your patience throughout this process. After reviewing the test results for Dead Island 2, our team recommended disabling the iGPU in your processor's BIOS on April 17, 2025. You informed us on April 18, 2025, that this did not resolve the issue.

On April 21, 2025, our technician noted that the game only recognizes the iGPU instead of the Intel Arc B580. You inquired about the game's optimization for Intel Arc Graphics, and we shared our findings on its performance across various settings on April 30, 2025. Despite our workaround, you confirmed on May 6, 2025, that the game remains unplayable, and a clean OS installation is not an option for you at this time.

To address your final question: unfortunately, Dead Island 2 is not optimized for Intel Arc B580 graphics. We recommend reaching out to the game developer for further assistance. You can share our findings with them as evidence of your efforts to resolve the hardware optimization issues with Intel's support.

We will be closing this case, and the thread will no longer be monitored. If you have any further questions or need clarification, please feel free to start a new thread or contact Intel Customer Support directly.
