Final Fantasy XIII Crashing

This has been reported before, but still doesn't appear to be fixed. I have a NUC 12 Enthusiast with Arc a770m and Iris Xe and FF13 keeps crashing. It worked fine on my previous Intel/NVidia system.

The crash occurs when zoning into an area where the player takes control of the party, in other words any time a save game is loaded or as soon as the intro sequence is finished on a new game. In full screen mode it also occurred sporadically at the main menu along with some audio glitching, but the only crash I could consistently reproduce is the one in the attached video in the 7z.

Hello Cʟᴀᴜᴅɪᴜꜱ

Thank you for posting on the Intel® ARC™ Graphics Communites. We are sorry you are experiencing crashes when trying to play Final Fantasy XIII on your system.

Based on the log file that you provided there is an older driver version installed on the system. Please let's try testing our latest drivers version 31.0.101.4369 and 31.0.101.4499. Uninstall the current driver using Display Driver Uninstaller and once it is uninstalled update to one of the latest versions. If possible test both versions.

If the issue persists in the latest driver, please share with us a screenshot of the in-game graphics settings and a log file from the  Intel® System Support Utility.

Thank you for getting back to me.

On your recommendation I tried both driver versions, using DDU before each install. The 31.0.101.4369 displayed the same behavior I described - it crashed just as it finished loading and the game is supposed to come into view.

With the beta driver (31.0.101.4499) I can load and run around on the world map as much as I want and do things like save the game (big improvement!), but it still crashes, now always in battle and seemingly when an ability is about to be animated, so possibly something to do with loading the animation, but I can't be sure.

Video is attached. The interesting part is the last 10 seconds, but I left the rest in so you can see it clearly working for a while and even successfully completing one battle before crashing in the next. It lasted a few battles longer in full screen mode before crashing when I tried it, but that could just be coincidence and it still ultimately crashed under the same conditions.

FFXIII has no in-game graphics settings, but I've included an image of the launcher with the few options it offers: windowed mode, 1920x1080 resolution, audio language, shadow resolution 1024x1024, and anti-aliasing x4.

Hello Cʟᴀᴜᴅɪᴜꜱ

Thank you for the information. We will need to further look into this issue, however, we would like to ask for two pieces of information that we are missing:

  • Is Resizbale Bar enabled on your system?
  • What distribution service was the game downloaded from?

Best Regards,

Well, I went into the UEFI/BIOS and didn't find an option for ReBAR, Smart Access Memory, or any other name it goes by, but did find this answer from Deivid A. with Intel support about my NUC model and ReBAR:

"Based on the investigation performed, the Resizable BAR feature is enabled by default for all PCIe devices on Serpent Canyon (including A770), but it doesn't have a setup option in BIOS."

From that, I'll assume the answer is that it's enabled.

I'm playing the Steam version of the game.

Hello Cʟᴀᴜᴅɪᴜꜱ,

Thanks for your time. I would like to let you know that we are still working on this issue, however, I would like to confirm if you have tested the latest driver version.

I just tested it and can confirm it's displaying the same behavior. Video attached - I had to cut it for size, but it begins after the first battle after loading. Note the small pause around the 12 second mark, and then during the second battle it crashes with a drawn-out frozen screen and stuttering audio which can't be heard in the video.

Hello Cʟᴀᴜᴅɪᴜꜱ

We were able to reproduce this issue using driver 31.0.101.4499 but did not experience it with driver 31.0.101.4502, however, we were only able to test the beginning of the game and the first battles. Are you able to test and play the very beginning of the game without issues? And if yes, Could you please let us know if the issue is only happening in certain or specific are from your side?

Also, please test the new BETA driver 31.0.101.4514 which was recently released. Make sure to continue doing the installations using Display Driver Uninstaller.

Best Regards,

Okay, I've had time to test it. When starting a new game, I'm able to run around and battle a bit and can understand why your testers might have had no issues for a while, but it still crashes for me eventually (see video), just more rarely early in the game for whatever reason. A couple times it behaved similar to what you see in the video, but one time I almost got through the whole intro zone before it crashed.

In the late game it happens much more often. Wish I could be more specific; I know how difficult finding bugs can be when they can't be reliably reproduced. While I can safely say it will crash whenever I fire the game up, it's very inconsistent in terms of what's going on in-game when it does. The only constant is that it happens at some point during battle (including the victory screen). Running around on the map sometimes produces a minor lag, but no crashes.

In case it helps, I've attached an endgame save file you can use to play test. The save folder is numbered individually by user, but if you've saved before then search for 'ff13' in steam/userdata and put it in the path folder with the others.

Edited this post and completely replaced the content as I may have solved the issue.

I've been getting a brand new (to me) crash since the latest build of the ARC driver (ending in .4952) that wouldn't even let me start the game anymore, and the specific crash message led me to what appears (pending further testing) to be a solution. The error was "DirectX VertexShader 2.0 not supported." Apparently this has been a known error for the PC ports of the whole FFXIII saga for some time, and the same fix used for other graphics cards has so far worked with my ARC as well.

Anyway, for anyone trying to get FFXIII to work with their ARC, follow the instructions here , specifically follow the first two links and both install the "fix" into your game files and run the 4gb patch on the exe.

If this fails to solve the problem long-term I'll post another update, but so far the game has run for longer without crashing than it ever has in previous testing. There are still occasional framerate drops, but I'm not prepared to blame ARC for those considering the game is a notoriously bad PC port.
