The card has delay when outputting the beginning of an audio playback

When starting to play an audio, sometimes the GPU will take time to output the audio to the monitor. This happens only with DisplayPort; the HDMI port isn't affected by this issue.

I noticed that it happens mostly when the GPU hasn't sent audio for some time (like 5 minutes). Here, when it will be asked to play audio (like when resuming a YouTube video), it won't sent audio for around 2 seconds, and after those 2 seconds, it will send the audio to the monitor like normal. This means that when it happens, the user won't be able to hear the beginning of the audio he wants. This is like if the audio chip on the GPU was off and is taking some time to "boot" up. This doesn't always happen.
I've linked an Intel Scan Report, and 4 videos of examples where the issue happens (you can hear the spacebar of me resuming the video, with the audio coming 2 seconds later). I have already done a DDU.

(Please do not ask me to get use the stable version of Windows and get of the Insider Preview, I'm already on the queue to opt out)

No one was answering me since more than a week on my last post, so I'm making a new one. I have closed the former

I've just noticed something else by the way:

Sometimes, only sometimes, when starting to play the audio, the first 0.2 or so seconds will be played, the audio then shuts down, and is coming back a second later

I am having the audio delay issue with the 31.0.101.5122 drivers on a clean, updated Windows 11 install.

It is very irritating because it is intermittent and will sometimes cut out a few seconds after starting normally. It makes it very hard to watch videos.

GPU is onboard i5 12500.

Can an Intel employee at least tell us at least if the Arc engineers have been noticed about this issue ? We have not heard any response in MONTHS

I want to precise that the issue is still completely live. If you want to experience it as much as you want, while playing a video in VLC media player, speed up and slow down the video you're playing with + and -, you'll experience the issue, though it's not exactly a delay

I have advised this issue before, and it seemed to fix itself with updates Win 11 and Graphic driver.

I am currently using a fresh install Win11 22631.2861 and latest driver 31.0.101.5084  12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700K Z-690 motherboard

TheWonderfulPie post dated 5 Nov 2023 has described the issue that I also have perfectly. I have tried different media player and the same result. It is definitely related to Display Port

First we were told it was a driver issue and then a Microsoft operating system problem that had been fixed it.

There is a workaround of sorts in VLC x64 under Audio desynchronization compensation by using 2000/2500 plus. It doesn't always work well.

Can Intel please look at this old on going issue. It is frustrating to say the least. This is a know issue and it would appear nothing is being done about it.

Tried it with an i9-13900k gpu, fully updated Windows 10.  Gigabyte motherboard. Same issue, slightly less delay. Only a problem with displayport.

Just blown away how Intel could have this issue with multiple generations of their chips for so long and not have fixed it by now.

Also, the problem is NOT present on an i7-8700 Lenovo SFF I tested running updated Windows 10 with latest GPU drivers.

It's 2024 now. With the latest 31.0.101.5186 driver, this issue still exists. No one can fix it?

This issue has been ongoing for more than a year. On Github Intel support link, people have also reported the same issue. It is with the DisplayPort - delayed sound that varies from 1ms to 3ms for me personally. Yes I have down a clean install of the latest driver 101.5234 and Win 11 23H2  .3085

TheWonderfulPie post dated 5 Nov 2023, explains the issue precisely.

I would appreciate if this issue could be dealt with. It is the most frustrating issue I have come across in recent years.

At last there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have just installed 3.10.101.5330 for my A770 8GB card and not only is the audio problem fixed but my games have stopped freezing. Up until now I have had full screen and audio freeze ups far too often but I have just played a good two hours without a hitch. A new record!

Better late than never!

I have also loaded the new driver 31.0.101.5330 on Win 11 22631.3155. When I play a music file with VLC media player, the first track selected now plays immediately, however if I select another track while the existing track is playing there is still approximately a 3 sec delay.

It would appear something has changed with this driver. HDMI and headphone outputs have always worked correctly.

I would like to switch to HDMI, though I only get 30 Hz, hence the reason to persist with this Display Port issue as I get 60 Hz

I can reproduce this with VLC but not with my usual music player foobar2000 which switches tracks and plays immediately without delay. It almost sounds like VLC is fading in the tracks.

Hi roadster,

Your right foobar2000 works without delay, even when skipping tracks. Did you have sound delay problems with foobar2000 before you updated your graphics driver?  VLC works as it should without delay via HDMI/headphone output, that leads me to believe the driver is still the issue.

No I've never had that problem with fb2K only with youtube videos and similar things like the windows desktop volume slider. I don't know if its completely fixed because the system sounds still splutter the first time they are triggered. I am also suspicious of Microsoft/Intel's aggressive power saving which means the old device settings continually get changed back if you set them to "don't allow the system to turn off this device..."

I don't understand, everyone seems to have this issue fixed now with the latest driver, but even though I've installed it and rebooted, I'm still having this issue

TheWonderPie,

If you read the comments carefully, the issue has not been fixed, though there appear to be some slight improvement/change with the new driver. There is still audio delay with DP.

Just updated to Graphics Driver 31.0.101.5333. No change with sound delay through Display Port.

Does anyone from Intel monitor these issues?

Hello everyone,
we purchased hundreds of Intel NUC11i5TNHs on which we installed our own image of the Windows 10 LTSC IoT Enterprise 2019 operating system. So all pcs are configured the same way, ditto for BIOS and video drivers.

@TheWonderfulPie  Some PCs have the same problem as yours by connecting them to a TV. Audio does not play for the first second.
By doing some tests the problem happens
- both using Youtube
- and also using VLC
- either by using Windows Media Player
- and also by clicking on the volume slider in Windows

If the audio is played immediately after the first audio ends, the problem does not occur
Confirmation of the audio problem via HDMI we got it by simultaneously connecting in Teamviewer. Windows plays the audio transmitted to Teamviewer perfectly, not so by playing the audio on the TV via HDMI.
There seems to be something that sends the audio part to HDMI into standby or power saving.
Trials of BIOS updates and graphics drivers have been futile.
We are increasingly convinced that the problem is related to pc hardware rather than driver compatibility. We are also waiting for updates from Intel and as a technology company with developers and system builders, we are not willing to follow basic resolutions whose usefulness we know very well.
Regards

For a while this problem went away but the latest windows11 update seems to have brought it back. I an almost convinced it has something to do with over-aggressive power saving. If the properties of the driver are changed and allow aggressive power saving box is unticked the settings is not retained on reboot.

Which device do you mean? In the device manager we checked every item and taking off the power saver didn't change anything.

The device is HD Audio Driver for Display Audio. There are two of these listed on my machine and I changed them both by un-ticking "allow this device ...etc" box on the power management tab. Even though the box comes back as selected after a reboot it still makes things work correctly for a while, very unpredictable though.

Could we please keep this issue on topic. We are talking about DP (Display Port) HDMI connections are not affected by a sound delay or headphone output.

I was curious about power settings after this was suggested as a possible fix. I have disabled all power saving modes. This also includes VLC. System-Display-Graphics-VLC media player. Click the icon – options – select high performance. It makes no difference to the sound delay output for DP.  It is not always consistent. Occasionally a first track may play immediately, a second track may take approx. 3 seconds to start. As also mentioned by TheWonderfulPie, a track may start initially a short delay and then continue.

Can I ask HelpDesk_TB are your connections HDMI or DP? Or have I misunderstood your comments?

From other contributors, there has been no sound delay issues with HDMI

I am using Win 11 22631.3235 Intel Graphics  31.0.101.5333, after having just down a fresh install.

My frustration is the no one from Intel has bothered to address this long ongoing issue.

Yes I confirm that we use HDMI connection.
One interesting thing: PCs have the problem on some TVs (not traceable to a specific model/), but other same PCs (as already mentioned that have the same Windows configuration, drivers, bios) with those TVs do not have it
