Variable Refresh Rate With Asus VG246H

I have an Asus VG246H which is a FreeSync monitor connected over HDMI to an A750. When I look at the general tab under display in Arc Control the Variable Refresh Rate option is grayed out and the dropdown says "Not supported." Is variable refresh rate not supported over HDMI with the ARC cards?

I tested the system with another FreeSync display over Display Port and that display was detected just fine.

 

GPU: Intel Arc A750 Graphics
GPU Driver Version: 31.0.101.4885
Processor: Intel Core i5-9600KF
Motherboard: MPG Z390 GAMING PLUS (MS-7B51)
BIOS Version: 7B51v1E
Physical Memory: 16 GB
Operating System version/build: Windows 11 Pro (22621)

After looking for more information, we would like to let you know that we have been able to confirm that VRR is supported over HDMI. The issue you report may be due to the monitor using an older HDMI 1.4, contrary to the HDMI 2.1 on the graphics adapter. We recommend you test an HDMI to DP adapter.

make sure to attach  your system info with this utility.  

my freesync  monitor shows up and works  g7 samsung 32" on display port .  so might be a hdmi issue.

Not about making me Happy. Actually follow instructions before you post. Your other report showed the old driver.. and old bios.. how does intel know u updated both?

We would like to thank you for posting in the Intel communities to report your Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) problem. We will be more than glad to help you to solve this problem. Before we provide you with any troubleshooting request, we would like to request the following information:

 

  • You mentioned that you tested a different monitor, could you share with us the model of this second monitor?
  • Also, you tried the second monitor using DisplayPort, are you able to test a different monitor using an HDMI connection?
  • Are you using any type of video adapters?
  • Since the Arc Control reports VRR as "Not supported", we would like to confirm the application version you have installed in your system:
    • Open Arc Control>Open the app settings> Look at the bottom center section and there should be the app version> It should be version v1.73.5335.2.
  • We would like to gather more information about your display, such as the EDID information, so please, share with us the Intel Graphics Command Center (Intel GCC) report:
    • Open the Intel Graphics Command Center
    • Navigate to the Support tab
    • Select System Diagnostic
    • Click Generate Report
    • Select Save and name the output file.

 

Finally, to discard that the issue is being caused by a corrupted file from a previous driver, we recommend you remove all the previous files and run the Display Driver Uninstaller. Check How to Use the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to Uninstall an Intel® Graphics Driver for instructions, and then install the driver 31.0.101.4885 again.

  • The other monitor is an Acer XV272U.
  • Per your request I have tested both HDMI inputs on the Acer XV272U with the GPU. The Variable Refresh Rate options were also grayed out when the Acer XV272U was connected over HDMI.
  • I am not using any video adapters
  • I can confirm that the version reported by ARC Control is v1.73.5335.2. I should also mention that the Adaptive Sync feature is also grayed out in Intel GCC.
  • I am attaching reports for both monitors. I am including three reports for the Acer XV272U since the EDID changes for each port on the monitor.

Ran DDU again for good measure no change in behavior.

We understand that the issue is present in a different monitor Model, and it remains after running the DDU. However, there is a new driver update 31.0.101.4887, and we would like to recommend you test the new driver to see if the issue remains with the latest fixes implemented in the new version.

No change after removing 31.0.101.4885 with DDU and installing 31.0.101.4887.

Since your monitor only supports 1920x1080, you really won't see a benefit from variable refresh rate.

Barbra...That's not true at all. Resolution has nothing to do with it. It's about how many frames and refresh rate.

Ah, that is the information I needed. So the card only supports the VRR standard that was implemented as part of HDMI 2.1 but not the older FreeSync method that implements VRR as an extension over HDMI. Good information to know if you are shopping for a compatible monitor.

 

Since this monitor doesn't have a DP and it only has one HDMI 1.4 port the monitor will only do VRR with AMD GPUs.

We want to clarify that we are not confirming a compatibility issue when using different HDMI standards (1.4 and 2.1). Rather, we are informing you that it is a possibility. We need to further investigate this matter, and trying an HDMI to DP adapter will help us gain more insight into this problem. Please, if it is feasible for you, let us know if the behavior improves when using the HDMI-to-DP adapter to connect the monitor and GPU.

Hello LastCarbon,

 

Thank you for your patience. After conducting a thorough investigation, we would like to inform you that the HDMI specification introduced limited support for VRR with its 2.0 update and complete support for VRR with its 2.1 update. It's worth noting that VRR is not supported by the HDMI specification 1.4 update.
