I recently got a new laptop an Acer vx15 which has only 1TB hard drive/ i7 7700HQ /and an empty M.2 slot, so optane comes in handy, as my only drive is an hdd i can really benefit from it but still not sure if it Will work on a laptop ?

Hello JackJake,

About your question, we would like to inform you that, initially, Intel® Optane™ Memory is targeted for desktops PC usage. Notebook and mobile systems featuring Intel® Optane™ Memory will be available at a later date.

You could check for more information on https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/optane-memory-faq.pdf this link.

We do know that, even if your laptop meets the requirements, the reason why it may not fully work is that the BIOS is not Intel® Optane™ ready and will require at least the Intel® RST version 15.5.0.1051 installed on it.

Greetings, thanks for the information.

I went ahead and ordered one anyway i will test it and see, worst case scenario i have a desktop that i'm sure its compatible with it.

Can this specific feature ' Intel® RST version 15.5.0.1051 ' be implemented to the board by usb or flashing another bios version? i don't see why not since the equipment is pretty modern.

I didn't add the optane memory yet, but ran through the setup and got https://pastebin.com/2qPAfF3r this log off it

it appears there is this error

  1. 2017:06:28 23:03:36:790: Unexpected application installed Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology

Hello JackJake,

We cannot comment or guarantee the laptop's manufacturers will be releasing a BIOS update that can install the latest Intel® RST driver; However, it is a possibility.

About the installation error, If you go and try the SetupOptaneMemory.exe, you need to uninstall the Intel® RST first. Both programs cannot be installed at the same time.

Hello JACKJAKE,

Based on the error, the installation cannot go through due to the BIOS since Intel® Optane™ Memory Technology requires the BIOS update to work with the motherboard.

This is the main reason why Intel® Optane™ Memory Technology cannot work in laptops yet, due to missing BIOS updates.

You may still use the Intel® Optane™ Memory Module as an SSD and use it as a boot drive.

If you have any other question, please let us know.

Regards,

Nestor C

Hi JACKJAKE,

You can use the module as an SSD as well and if in the future you would like to set it up to be used as Intel® Optane™ Memory Technology, you can just basically format the module and delete the partition, so you can configure it properly to accelerate an SATA boot drive.

Please let us know if you have any other question.
