Hi,

I purchased an i7-7700K Kaby Lake processor and looked for a Motherboard to host it and a 32GB stick of Optane memory, I found a Gigabyte Z170-Gaming K3 which in the Advertisment on their website says that it has an M.2 socket, I purchased the board but when I try to install the optane Memory it says "Chipset NOT Supported" if this Optane memory is not supported which Optane memory do I need ?

Thanks

Stuart

Hello acestu,

Thanks for posting and your interest in our products.

Currently, Intel® Optane™ memory is available in two capacities, 16GB and 32GB. Both require a 200 series Intel chipset or newer. Even though the Gigabyte GA-Z170-Gaming K3* supports 7th generation Intel CPUs, it's not Intel® Optane™ memory compatible.

You can learn more about Intel® Optane™ memory features and requirements here:

Hello Eugenio,

You wrote : "Currently, Intel® Optane™ memory is available in two capacities, 16GB and 32GB"

Today I saw https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078ZK1ZLL/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_11?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3LGJ9ZB5RSN9T Intel Optane SSD 800p Series (118GB, M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0, 3D XPoint) by Intel

Does it have same specifications as 16 and 32GB Intel Optane memory?

How does it perform versus This item Intel SSD 760p Series (256GB, M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0 x4, 3D2, TLC) that appears cheaper?

Hello Andrey_nsk,

Thanks for posting.

The idea of https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/optane-memory.html Intel® Optane™ memory (16/32GB) is to integrate into the main drive and accelerate the system, while https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/consumer-ssds/optane-800p-series.html Intel® Optane™ SSD 800P Series is used as a regular storage drive while enjoying the endurance offered by Intel® Optane™ technology.

As for Intel® SSD 760p Series (256GB), the drive is faster than Intel® Optane™ SSD 800P Series (118 GB), while the later has bigger endurance. You can compare the specifications for both drives here:

Hello Eugenio,

Could you explain what is the major difference between Intel DC P4800X SSDPED1K375GA01 and Ihttps://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/enthusiast-ssds/optane-ssd-905p-brief.html ntel Optane 905p , please?

The former appears to have 12.3 PWB/30DWPD, and the latter has 10DWPD.

Is the endurance their main major difference?

Hello Andrey_nsk,

Thanks for your interest in our products.

The main difference https://ark.intel.com/compare/97162,147528 between these drives is that Intel® Optane™ SSD DC P4800X Series is geared towards data centers/servers and is capable of dealing with heavier workloads typical of those environments, while Intel® Optane™ SSD 905P Series is a consumer drive designed for enthusiasts that takes advantage of https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/intel-optane-technology.html Intel Optane technology.

Hello Eugenio,

Thank you for your response,

Currently I am looking into the possibility of using ssd intel optane 905p with a motherboard that has 1) sata and 1) pcie 3.0 4-lanes ports available.

As far as I am concerned, to use the ssd 905p Series U.2 form factor, it will require to add 2 adapters :

a) https://www.asus.com/Motherboard-Accessory/Hyper_Kit/ Hyper Kit | Motherboard Accessory | ASUS Global

b) https://www.asus.com/Motherboard-Accessory/HYPER_M2_X4_MINI_CARD/ HYPER M.2 X4 MINI CARD | Motherboard Accessory | ASUS Global

I am just wondering if there is a way to use the ssd 905p with less number of adapters . May be Intel has pci express 3.0 4 lanes to u2 adapters?

Will the performance of that 2 adapter +ssd 905 be ll better than somewhat sata ssd ?

Will the speed of ssd 905p reduce if the two listed above adapters are used with ssd 905p?

What sata ssd could you suggest as an alternative to 905p u.2?

Regards,

Andrei

Another question is if 905p comes with cable https://www.amazon.com/SFF-8639-Cable-Mainboard-Intel-SFF-8643/dp/B01J3MYD8K/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_147_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=ZA7H108ZVVFK8AT1ZSC1 https://www.amazon.com/SFF-8639-Cable-Mainboard-Intel-SFF-8643/dp/B01J3MYD8K/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_147_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

or the cable will be the third element via that the ssd can be attached to pci express 3.0 4-lane that will need to be ordered separately from a third party vendor.

5 elements constructor seems to be too long chain for disk drive, in my opinion:

1 board pci express

Hello Andrey_nsk,

We don't recommend using a PCIe x4 to M.2 adapter to connect the drive, this is not a validated scenario and we can't assure it'll work. To answer your question regarding the cables, https://ark.intel.com/products/147528/Intel-Optane-SSD-905P-Series-480GB-2_5in-PCIe-x4-3D-XPoint the 2.5" version of the drive is available on two different packages, one comes with the M.2 to U.2 cable (SSDPE21D480GAM3), while the other includes the standard U.2 cable (

SSDPE21D480GAX1).

The Intel Optane SSD 905P will perform far better than any SATA drive. We can't tell for sure how much the performance will be affected if using multiple adapters (or even if the drive will work at all) and since there's a huge difference in performance between this drive and SATA SSDs, there's not a specific Series we can recommend to you as an alternative. However, you may use our Product Specification site Advanced Search to find a drive that meets your needs:

- https://ark.intel.com/ Intel® Product Specifications

The Intel® Optane™ SSD 905P Series is also available on https://ark.intel.com/products/129834/Intel-Optane-SSD-905P-Series-960GB-12-Height-PCIe-x4-20nm-3D-XPoint 1/2 Height (Add-in-card) form factor and the interface is PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4, but it's only available on a larger capacity (960GB). With this model you won't need any adapters as long as the system is NVMe storage compatible. You can learn more about this SSD requirements in the following article:

Eugenio F,

Thank you for your response.

I am just wondering if the PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4, will work at PCI-E gen 4 port. Because the manufacturer released an updated board that will have gen4 rather than gen3. And it will have also have rather wider PCI slot than 4 lane, as it seems to me. It appears that I wont be able to use the optane 905p with a wider port .

Hello Andrey_nsk,

The PCIe technology is backwards compatible. You shouldn't have problems using a previous generation device on a newer PCIe port.

Hi Eugenio,

Thank you for your response.

However, it turned out that optane 905p doesn't work at once with the next Generation [pci gen 4 , wide as for 16x] of the new generation of the devkit that has only 16x wide slot pci-e, at least I have not managed to dig deep enough into kernel sources to get that support implemented.

That is why I have another question.

As per state of events as per today I have the ssd optane 905p and I am to order core i9 9900k. [Additional question is if i9 9900k box comes with a cooler/fan]

However, when I research z390 chipsets motherboard availability I can see very few models that have pcie x4 port onboard. And I expect that I shall rather select a motherboard that has 4x pci-e than 16x only or 16x + 1x pcie ports.

Therefore the question is if you could give a hand with a selection of a suitable motherboard that will support both i9 9900k and optane 905p. Additionally, I have a separate pci-e graphic card . and the latter eliminates the need to have an integrated video, in my opinion. Moreover, intended use is for training CNN like with caffe or digits etc. Therefore extensive workloads as a result.

So far I can see three-to-four candidates:
