[Quartus2 Version 9.0 Build 132 on WinXP SP2] The project is compiled, the programmer window is started, no programmer assigned, I click the hardware setup button and quartus freezes. I have to kill the app from the task manager. This must not be, regardless what I did wrong.

Try downloading WinXp Service Pack 3. Probably that will help.

Thanks. Try ? I tend to not download any servicepacks unless it is the last option. Too much of the system changes in unexpected ways.

You can always uninstall Service Pack 3 if it doesn’t work

Ah. That would be rather counter experience with MS. Sorry for appearing trustless, you just guess the service pack could make a difference or you're certain that this solves the problem ?

By the way, the OS devicemanager recognizes the USB Blaster and tags it as operational.

After the (N+1)th restart of Quartus (uncounted), the programmer was suddenly there. So the problem is solved for me.

Actually, it is not. Every time I start Quartus with the USB Blaster reconnected, I have to go through restarting Quartus again.

I have similar problem with Quartus 8.1. My solution is to delete .cdf file in the project directory.

May it help you.
