Hi,
I have bought a developement kit from Altera and installed the full version of QuartusII. I also installed the ModelSim-Altera 6.1g, but when I try to open ModelSim I get an error message: "Unable to checkout a license". How do I make ModelSim work? Regards, MortenLink Copied

You need to request a separate license for the ModelSim tools.
Go to the Altera WEB page. Upper right corner. Licensing - or go right here. https://www.altera.com/support/licensing/free_software/lic-q2web.jsp I hope this helps.- Mark as New

Hi,
It is not the web-edition of QuartusII I use. My license is NIC-based. I can download ModelSim from http://www.altera.com/products/software/products/model/eda-ms.html, but I can't get a license.- Mark as New

When you requested the license, did you also ask for the ModelSim license?
If so,then all you may need to do is set the FlexLM variable. http://www.altera.com/support/software/products/modelsim/mod-modelsim.html may help, then follow the links for your situation. If these paths do not help, then file a MySupport case and ask that they also supply you with the ModelSim license for your kit. They will need your MAC address.- Mark as New

Avatar is correct.
When you originally purchase any development kit, the sales person should ask for your MAC address. If they don't, then you will need to call Altera customer service so that they can register your MAC address to the development kit. Altera customer service: 800-SOS-EPLD. Good luck!- Mark as New

Hi MossGuard
I don't think Altera provides Modelsim Altera licenses with Dev Kits, I think its only given to Subscription customers. You may be able to get a Modelsim-Altera Web edition licesnce via the web edition license flow.- Mark as New

I agree with QuartusPenguin. Altera does not offer the Modelsim-Altera software with development kits, although you should be able to obtain a Modelsim-Altera web edition license from the web.
I found this link on altera.com: http://www.altera.com/support/licensing/lic-choose.html. All you have to do is click on "Quartus® II Web Edition software and the ModelSim®-Altera® Web Edition software." Best of Luck!
