Hi,
Are you trying to say that you can not start up the setup of ModelSim-Altera? Probably the setup may have got corrupted while downloading from the Altera website. Could you tell me what error is being given? It would be worth noting that ModelSim-Altera will require a subscription license for running the software. You can download ModelSim-Altera Web Edition, which is available as separate download, if you want to use the web license for running this software. Cheers BD- Mark as New

Hi..
Thanks for your reply.. I downloded once again and now i installed in my PC. But here when i open Model sim Altera then its giving me Error like.. "Unable to checkout a license. Make sure your license file environment variables are set correctly and then run 'lmutil lmdiag' to diagnose the problem. Modelsim-Altera uses the following environment variables to check the licenses (listed in the order of preference) 1. MGLS_LICENSE_FILE 2. LM_LICENSE_FILE". Now i dont know what to do..I have installed Quartus 2 just 2 week ago and its working fibne but problem with only Model sim..Do i need another licence file for only Model sim or there is common licence file for Quartus 2 and Model sim..?? I read some stuff from Altera link (http://www.altera.com/support/kdb/solutions/rd06272006_61.html) but i could not able to get it..(like..where i can get Imutil Imdiag and how to run ) Please Help me out. Thanking you.- Mark as New

Hi,
In older version of ModelSim, there used to be one utility called diagnose.exe, which could set the LM_LICENCE_FILE path for you. But in new versions, you don't find this utility. You'll have to set LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable manually. You could do so by doing followings: - Right click on My Computer icon, click properties - Select Advanced tab and click on the Environment Variables button (right above OK button) - in the "User Variables for user_name" section, click new - Type in LM_LICENSE_FILE in the Variable Name section - Type in the path (where your license file is located, e.g., c:\altera\license.dat) in the Variable Value section - Click OK - Close all the remaining windows by clicking OK in each of them This should set your environment variable. If this does not affect immediately, you may need to restart your PC once. Again, I would like to emphasize that you need to have correct license for running correct version of ModelSim-Altera (i.e., Subscription version or Web Edition). Which version are you using? If you are using web edition, then you can get the license for ModelSim-Altera web edition along with the Quartus II web edition license. (You get an optional check mark for opting for ModelSim-Altera web edition license when you request for Quartus II web edition license). If you missed including support for ModelSim-Altera web edition license when you requested for Quartus II license, you can request Quartus II web edition license again and also include support for ModelSim-altera web edition license. You should get the combined license in no time. If you are using a subscription software, you must request for subscription license. Web edition license does not work with subscription version software and vice versa. I hope that this solves your problem. Cheers, BD- Mark as New

WEB edition is either 6 months or 1 year.
Just before it expires, you should get a warning count down message. You can ask Altera for a reup on the license. Subscription edition is 1 year. Same thing. If you do NOT renew the subscription you can get a new license that will allow you to keep running the version that you have, but will not allow new updated releases to work. Avatar- Mark as New

What is the exact error message displayed when you try to run ModelSim-Altera? Also, which version are you using - web edition or subscription?

nb : the lm_license_file variable in variable environments doesn't accept multiple extension like "license.0805.dat"

Is there a solution for this problem? I have the same with ModelSim-Altera 6.1g. I've tried it on my WinXP and on my Vista PC. On both the same Error:
Fatal License Error: Unable to checkout a license. Make sure your license file environment variables are set correctly and then run 'lmutil lmdiag' to diagnose the problem. Modelsim-Altera uses the following environment variables to check the licenses (listed in the orer of preference) 1. MGLS_LICENSE_FILE 2. LM_LICENSE_FILE lmutil lmdiag tells twice, that this (my) machine is the correct node for this node-locked license. First for 'quartus_lite' and second for 'alteramtiwe'. Here the installation sequence on a new installed system: quartus II 8.0sp1 Web edition installed modelsim-altera 6.1g (Quartus II 8.0) installed quartus started, LM_LICENSE_FILE as source for the license choosed - no license found LM_LICENSE_FILE as system variable added with the path to the newly requested license file quartus started - license found and accepted modelsim started - above printed license error occures, every time I start the software. What can I do? I asked google before and found no solution for this problem. plz help.- Mark as New
