I get the following error when trying to generate HDL for a system:

Error: border: Error during execution of script generate_hps_sdram.tcl: seq: Error during execution of "{C:/intelfpga_lite/19.1/quartus/../nios2eds/Nios II Command Shell.bat} make all 2>> stderr.txt": child process exited abnormally

I am using Quartus Lite 19.1 and have installed the windows patch. I have also found another work around for older versions that needed to uncheck a Linux support setting as well. I thought that perhaps I had some incorrect setting but I tried a GHRD Qsys file for the DE10 Nano kit that I am using and this also failed with the same error. Help!!

Go to check the jtagserver.exe (same path as in the generate log) whether it is enabled in the firewall for all network types, see below:

jtagserver firewall

You may have to click on the 'Change settings' button with a shield icon on it before the firewall rules are editable - they are locked against being changed by software.

You might need to have the admin to do this.

I have exactly the same issue and have tried both your your above suggestions without luck. I am trying to generate the GHRD for the DE-10 Nano (unchanged) and had it fail on Quartus 18.1 lite. I assumed it was a conversion error (as the GHRD (since it was made with 16.0. Tried it with 17.1 lite, 16.1 lite and 16.0 lite and all had the same issue. Contacted Terasci supported and they said they generated using standard not lite. Installed a trial of 16.0 Standard, same issue. Terasic now suggests trying a different computer or reinstalling the O/S =(.

This error happened due to the updated windows 10 version, if you have linux machine, you can generate it there.

Further investigation, if the patch above does not work. You may use the workaround mention below:

- uninstalled Ubuntu 18.04 (If you have)

- uninstalled wsl  

- re-installed wsl

- downloaded latest Ubuntu 18.04 from Microsoft Shop & installed it

- executed following on Ubuntu shell :   

   sudo apt-get update

   sudo apt install wsl 

  sudo apt install dos2unix

  sudo apt install make 

  sudo apt-get upgrade

i had the same issue on my machine with quartus 18.1 std and spent weeks on trying to understand why this was happening. after weeks i found out that the sw Carbon black was actually blocking some nios scripts from running on my machine which was causing this from happening.

Hi Tim, hi others, searching for solutions!

At some point some software designer had the brilliant idea that the life of user could become more interesting by using the NIOS tool chain eben for projects not using NIOS. No one will read the additional requirements for the NIOS toolchain when not using NIOS.

I did and installed WSL and Ubuntu on Linux. (See How to install the Windows* Subsystem for Linux* (WSL) on Windows* OS? )
Well, didn't help.

Then I found Why do I get an error in Platform Designer ... , this helped.

I don't know if you really need the WSL step. Just in case you do, I leave it in here.
