Quartus II v12.0 sp2 problems

 a few days ago I installed Quartus II v12.0 sp2, so that I could programme an FPGA board with a Cyclone II chip on it. Previously, I was using v10.1 sp2, programming CPLDs. I still have this installed on my PC.  This morning, when using v12.0, the programme 'hangs' when I'm typing in the editor. Not every time, but it's happened 5 or 6 times so far, and I get the 'Programme not responding' window up and I have to exit the programme. I also noticed that not all of the files appear in the expanded 'hierarchy' list, even though they are there in the 'files' list. I never had this with v10.1.   Is there a known issue with v12.0 which could be causing this, or could it be caused by a corrupt file or some conflict with the still-installed v10.1 ?  Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi, multiple versions of Quartus can cohabit. They just result in bad paths for NIOS II SBT/IDE. But a simple tool readapt the environment paths. 

I think your problem is elsewhere.  You can also program Cyclone II with Quartus 10

 thanks for your reply. I found an Altera article concerning this problem with v12.0 and 12.1 and a patch to fix it.Something to do with just having one partition (?).  I'd rather go back to using v10.1, as it didn't give me any trouble. I tried to find the device file for CycloneII, but it doesn't seem to exist independently of the full download. When I downloaded it originally, I thought I had the option of which device support to download, and I unchecked all other device options other than MAXII then as that was all I needed and to save space. The website says additional device support can be downloaded later, if required, but the option to download individual files doesn't seem to exist for this version. Maybe the options appear. Maybe the options appear when the exe is run, I can't remember.  If anyone knows where I can find device support for CycloneII devices as a standalone file for v10.1, I'd be grateful if they point me to it.   regards

With Java Altera Downloader, you can choose which software to install between Quartus, Modelsim. I have not seen options to download individual files, but seen options when installing. 

 A common solution is to delete the "db" sub-directory of the project, Quartus will regenrate this.  You could download the 3GB of Quartus Installation : for web edition (free) : https://www.altera.com/download/archives/arc-index.jsp precisely https://www.altera.com/download/software/quartus-ii-we/10.1  I am using 12.0sp1 with Cyclone II, NIOS II SBT, in my experience this is the most approved version for Cyclone II (minor bugs are still present)  Be careful 12.1 doesn't support Cyclone II, if I remeber correctly EDIT : Quartus 13.1 removes support of Cyclone and Cyclone II (www.altera.com/literature/rn/archives/rn_qts_131_dev_support.pdf)
