USB Blaster cable fails to programm, causes PC to restart

I recently used a USB blaster cable for programming my CPLD (MAX V family) using Quartus Prime lite edition. The problem that I am facing is that during the first two-three attempts of using the programmer, it successfully programmed the CPLD. But, now as I attempt to burn the code on the CPLD, Quartus shows programming failed and causes my computer to restart. Since then, I am unable to use the cable for programming. Kindly help me on this issue.

Wow, that sounds nasty. I've never heard of that before. Anything change on the PC since it was working, like a Windows update, Quartus update, etc? You might try reinstalling Quartus so that the driver gets reinstalled. And try a Project -> Clean Project .. in Quartus to clear the project database. Then rebuild and try again. I suppose this could be an electrical problem but I doubt it. Sounds like a tool/driver problem.

If all else fails open a Service Request with Altera and send them your project.

Please post back with whatever happens. This is a good one.

Is this your own hardware, or a development board? I'm concerned your design causes your CPLD to draw too much current and has damaged the power supplies.

As for the PC, assuming windows, under the Start button type 'view event log', click on 'View event logs' and look through there for the reason the PC restarted. If it's shut down unexpectedly your PC should come back up asking if you wish to boot in safe mode. Does it?

Check all the power supplies on your target board. Are they all OK?

Can your PC see the USB-Blaster - can you see it in 'Device manager'? (It doesn't need to be connected to your target board, just the PC.)

Check all these and report back.

No Windows or quartus updates have been done since I started using the cable.

I tried to reinstall the drivers and make a clean project but the problem still prevails.

I also searched through the altera forums for using the cable with windows 8 followed the instructions but still problem not resolved. Also I tried it on windows 7 still the same.

My computer successfully installs the Altera USB blaster cable and shows it in Device manager.

The cable is purchased from local market.

Have you checked the rails on your board? Have you found out why your PC re-starts?
