I am running an Acer computer with Winoze (aka Windows) 7.
I have a couple of cheap Cyclone II boards so installed Quartus II 10.1 a while back. I had successfully installed ModelSim-starter 10.1, and used, along side. I had no success installing the 10.1 University Program (UP) material and getting either of Qsim or its waveform editor running. There was an error raised during the install, and while I had menu items or desktop shortcuts they were blank (no glyph) and reported no binary attached when you double clicked on them. I found downloading the 11.1 version of the UP gave me Qsim (??) but not the waveform editor (double ??). I decided to remove 10.1 install Quartus II 11.1 sp2 build 259. All good expect now when I go to intall ModelSim-starter won't install. It doesn't "find" an installation of Quartus II 11.1 sp2 , and even when I point it to the installation directory manually it refuses to acknowledge the existing installation. I have tried c:\altera\, C:\altera\11.1sp2, C:\altera\11.1sp2\quartus, C:\altera\11.1sp2\quartus\bin etc. Quartus II 11.1 sp2 is happily running so the install should have happily touched up the registry et cetera so the ModelSim installer should have found it there - if it checks the registry. Has anyone seen this before? Better still has anyone fixed this problem before? Reacap, 10.1 Quartus II and ModelSim were uninstalled before the 11.1 install of both tools. I am likely not interested in chasing done the failed UP install as I am happy (I guess) to use ModelSim instead of Qsim. Cheers, ALink Copied

Thank you for the flood of silence.
Turns out that I needed to burn up more of my internet download limit to grab the original ModelSim-Starter 11.1, which was quite happy to recognize the 11.1 sp2 install of Quartus II. So to recap, where the 11.1 sp2 installer for ModelSim-Starter refuses to recognize an installed Quartus II 11.1 sp2 installation (its companion), the superseded 11.1 version of Model-Sim-Starter will install despite the later service pack of Quartus II being installed. That would count somewhat as a bug in the SP2 installer I suspect. Moreover, the original installer does not appear to care to look for an installed Quartus 11.1, it creates its own target directory oblivious, it appears, to the 11.1 sp2 directory I have sitting on my drive. This actually may not mean much more than the installer for 11.1 sp2 is actually looking for an "11.1" directory as opposed to my install directory called (mysteriously) "11.1 sp2". So, with two different behaviors between two installers of service packs of the same revision of the software I expect this will catch anyone out. Stay tuned as I try to discover how to get ModelSim 11.1 sp2 on my machine.- Mark as New

Yep, so the story goes:
- I ripped out all Altera software from my computer. - Had to use regedit to fully clean it though because the altera software clumsily leaves junk behind in registry. - Re-install Quartus II sp2 Build 259 into clean directory "11.1" and program group "Altera 11.1". - Tried installing ModelSim-Starter 11.1 sp2 Build 259 into directory "11.1" and program group "Altera 11.1" and kaplunk! It refuses to install. - Rather than going all the way back to first version of modelsim 11.1 I took a chance, burnt more download time, and got hold of ModelSim-Starter 11.1 sp1 Build 216 and installed it into directory "11.1" and program group "Altera 11.1" successfully. Ergo, there is something flaky in the ModelSim-Starter 11.1 sp2 Build 259 installer.
