Unison can't handle TEL or DIAL links

Hi,

I finally got Unison functioning on my Windows 11 system (I had to reinstall Windows!) but I can't figure how to integrate it with TEL or DIAL links.

I gather it's supposed to work; the solution to this similar thread included associating Unison with TEL links. However I can't set up Unison as the default app for TEL links in Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose defaults by link type. (I can choose any browser, or Teams or Phone Link, but not Unison.) I see that Unison is already the default handler for DIAL (and INTELUNISON) links, so I installed the "Telephone Number Detection" extension to convert TEL links to DIAL. Clicking on a generated link now causes the Unison window to pop to the foreground, but nothing else happens — whatever screen was currently displayed (e.g. Gallery) stays up, and the number apparently is not transmitted to Unison. (This admittedly could be down to the extension malfunctioning, but how can I figure out what's actually getting sent?)

Any ideas?

Hello NJDave,

To better assist you, I need to gather some additional information. Could you please answer the following questions?

  1. Is there any error message during set-up?
  2. Have you tried to check for the available update for Unison Software and Extensions?
  3. What devices are you trying to connect or paired?
  4. Is this happening before or this is the first time setting this software?

Providing this information will help me diagnose the software more accurately and check for available solutions.

Best regards,

Thanks for the reply, Randy...

Is there any error message during set-up?

There is the usual "Oops, something went wrong" during initial setup, but subsequently I was able to complete pairing. As mentioned previously, I reinstalled Windows to get this far. Prior to this I uninstalled and reinstalled Unison countless times on both the PC and my phone but couldn't get pairing to complete. Going back further (a month or so) I did have Unison installed and mostly working. During all these attempts I have never been able to associate Unison with TEL links in Windows — this behavior has been constant. This thread on the forum references the same issue without a solution. At present Unison makes calls just fine, so communication with the phone seems completely functional; it's the app's communication with Windows that seems to be the problem.

Have you tried to check for the available update for Unison Software and Extensions?

In all cases it's been the latest version of Unison. In this case it's version 20.27.10835.0 installed 16 January.

What devices are you trying to connect or paired?

PC:
Dell Vostro 5890, i7-10700
Windows Pro 24H2 26.100.2894
Plugable USB-BT5 adapter, driver 1.9.1041.3000

Phone:
Apple iPhone 14
iOS 18.2.1

Is this happening before or this is the first time setting this software?

As mentioned previously I've tried countless times to set up Unison, sometimes successfully. In all these attempts, Windows has automatically associated Unison with file or link types DIAL and INTELUNISON, but not type TEL. Currently on my system the choices for TEL are my currently installed browsers Edge and Brave, Phone Link (not currently set up) and Microsoft Teams. I have the option to "Browse apps in the Microsoft Store", but this doesn't associate apps with file types; it just searches the Store for the string "TEL".

 Hello NJDave,

Thank you for your response. I reviewed the community thread you shared, and it seems that this feature is not supported. However, since that thread is nearly two years old, I will verify in our database to see if there have been any updates that may address this issue. Please allow me some additional time to investigate further, and I will get back to you with an answer. Thank you for your patience.

Best regards,

Hi Randy,

I reviewed the community thread you shared, and it seems that this feature is not supported.

Okay... but there must be some way Unison is (or is supposed to be) integrated in Windows, so that you can click on a link and have the number inserted in Unison the same way myriad other apps work, no? How are DIAL links supposed to work? Unison is the default handler for them. What are they for, if not this?

Hello NJDave,

The call functionality is exclusively accessible for both outgoing and incoming calls through the Intel Unison PC Application. This limitation is attributed to a recognized issue within the Windows Operating System, which currently restricts the integration of this feature beyond the specified application. Consequently, users are required to utilize the Intel Unison PC App to leverage the call capabilities, as the operating system does not support this functionality natively or through alternative applications at this time.

Randy,

Thanks for your reply, but I have NO idea what you just said. Phone Link and Teams can be set up as the default app for TEL links, as can Edge, Chrome, Brave, and probably Firefox, Opera, and other browsers. Why can't Unison?
