My girlfriend has a Gateway MX8741 with a T2130 dual core processor. Apparently, GW installed it as a "cheapie" as it will not accept 64 bit even though advertized as "dual core". I can't install W7 64 bit.
Is it possible on this PC (or practical) to replace the processor with an up to date model? If so, what processor?

Yes , But it takes a great deal of skill to remove a mother board from a laptop , and thats what you have to do to replace the CPU, Are you up to the task?? It's about 130 screws and a lot of time ,you realy need to need to know what you are doing.

Say what?????
I have replaced processors before - on desktops. I have replaced RAM on various laptops, but not the processor. I really have to pull the MB just to access the processor? Gee, did Gateway begin in Detroit where they built some cars that you had to almost pull the engine to change thew plugs? (Yes, you could get away with releasing engine mounts on one side and jacking the engine up.)
Maybe she can live with it until I get her a new one.......... Her mother has the same model that just died. HD fine. I suspect first the power supply with either the MB or processor next. Mmmm - spare parts?
Thanks much for your time. Really. Have a great year.

well if you just want a faster MX8741 computer you can just replace the processor with this processor Intel T2600 its not a 64 bit processor but its a 2.1 ghz .. now with the MX8741 computer you cant use a windows 7 64 bit OS in it because of the fact its a laptop if you had that feature with this model you wood surly OVER HEAT !!
because of the fact that a limited air flow for this model and any other laptop ... now if you just wanted to install windows 7 32 bit ( witch is recominded way better then vista Home) and top out the ram to 2 gb max and a 2.1ghz processor is practualy all you can do with this computer
