Intellij Idea crashing on 14900hx

hello,

I recently got a new Laptop with i9-14900HX and have experienced constant crashes in Intellij Idea Ultimate (JetBrains IDE) which I use for Java development. The moment I open the software it gives me 'EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION' error and crashes. I have tried different versions of the software and have also tried different versions of JDKs but none of them worked. I have also updated the bios and drivers to the latest version as well. I believe this issue is related to the recent stability issues with the 13th and 14th gen Intel Core processors. I have performed Hardware scans and the system passes those tests without reporting any errors. I am attaching the crash logs of intellij for reference here and also the system specifications with some other details.

System vendor: Lenovo

product: Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 (83DF)

System specifications:

Operating System: Windows 11 (23H2)

Processor: Intel Core i9-14900HX

Ram: 32 Gb (DDR5-5600 MHZ)

Storage: 1TB SSD

Try using the intel default settings. But i suggest contacting the oem of your computer to further check it. As per this link: https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/Clarification-Update-on-Intel-Core-13th-14th-Gen-Desktop/m-p/1618462

Hi Senkuchan,

Actually I am on a mobile system which means I don't have access to any of these settings as Lenovo does not allow any CPU clock and voltage manipulation on their laptops atleast they don't allow any of those options on my specific model. I have updated the bios to the latest version though which did not help. As per Lenovo they performed hardware test and everything was fine so they said the problem might be with the application. So then I contacted Intellij and they did say that currently high end 13th and 14th generation CPUs have some stability issues. So well now I am stuck with a broken IDE and only Intel left who I believe can help me

You are on mobile chip, shouldn't be affect by desktop chip issue(13th/14th gen issue).

Yes, I am on a mobile system but 13th and 14th gen HX variant processors are nothing but desktop chips just binned down for use in constrained environments like laptops. Just because it's a mobile chip it doesn't mean that its safe unlike it's desktop counterparts and now with Intel stating that non-k and other skus may also be compromised to these stability issues. I do have a suspicion that my processor might also be affected.

I think Intel has clarify that mobile chip don't have the same issue with desktop chip.

Even if so the 13th/14th gen crash issue is randomly occured from what I see in the internet discussion. Your problem here seems 100% occurs without any randomless. It should be a software bug instead of hw issue.

Although intel has clarified it still doesn't mean that mobile CPUs specially the HX variant are not affected. It is not only Intellij or the software I use that is crashing, even windows explorer is crashing. Now if the problem here was the software then I believe using older versions should eradicate the issue and crashes but that's not the case. I have tried using versions which were about 2 years old which worked perfectly on my old machine but they too are crashing with the same error. I have also reinstalled windows a couple of times but that also did not fix the issue. So i do believe that this is not a software bug.

There are numerous rumors regarding the impacted processor. To be certain, you should verify with your OEM. However, keep in mind that these are just speculations.

I think some running service/software in background might be incompatible with Intellij.

Windows explorer sucks so it often crashes no matter what.

Have you tried reinstalling Windows?

I reinstalled a complete new fresh copy of the windows and it seems to have resolved the issue. it doesn't crash within five seconds of launching so that is a improvement. I will now set it up the way I normally use the software and see if the problem appears again.

Bold to assume, its a direct variant of a 14900 but for mobile. So it's likely going to hiccup less due to the massive restrictions CPU's in laptops have to deal with.

That said his problem will escalate and get way worse over time once that laptop gets a lil dusty.

@JainilJain This is a CPU error. RMA it.  It will get worse.

I understand but the issue is Lenovo will only act up when given solid evidence that it is a hardware issue. Because the system passes hardware tests with which they conclude that the problem is with the software and not the hardware. I have tried contacting them and made sure to make them aware about these issues with 13th and 14th generation processors but they always say that problem is with the desktop skus and mobile skus are completely safe and reliable.

I have the same problem as you!

I'm using the ROG Zephyrus G15 Plus 2024(14900HX 4080) to develop Minecraft mods with IntelliJ IDEA. However, I've encountered a very frustrating issue that has been causing me a lot of trouble. I've tried various methods to resolve it, including adjusting the JVM memory settings, reinstalling Windows, and updating the BIOS, but none of these solutions have worked.

I've noticed a peculiar pattern: when I open IDEA and then leave it idle for a while (about 5 minutes) to do something else, and come back to interact with it, the crash occurs much later than before (it used to crash within 1-15 seconds of opening). Sometimes, IDEA even runs without crashing until I shut down the computer. This leads me to suspect that some other program might be using the memory address 0x00007ff90f6446c7, which prevents IDEA from accessing it and thus avoids crashing. For example, the last time I started my computer, IDEA didn't crash at all, but after a reboot, it started crashing frequently again, almost immediately after opening. Therefore, I strongly suspect that the issue is related to the memory address 0x00007ff90f6446c7.

In fact, the issue isn't entirely unsolvable. There were two instances where IDEA ran perfectly fine from startup until shutdown without any crashes. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out why IDEA worked so well during those times.
The first time was after I used the Huorong antivirus software to repair the system. It detected and fixed a registry anomaly. After that, IDEA ran smoothly until I shut down the computer. But when I restarted, IDEA returned to its random crashing state, usually crashing immediately after opening.
The second time was after I reinstalled the system and entered the BIOS to initialize the BIOS settings. IDEA worked fine again until I restarted the device. However, each crash log consistently showed the same memory address error: . This error message never changed, leading me to suspect that the problem might be closely related to this specific memory address.EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x00007ff90f6446c7
