What Do the Letters Mean in Intel® Chipset Names?

All of my searches resulted in this URL:

How to Identify Intel® Desktop Chipsets

which says,

"The Intel® Chipset numbers generally starts with one (or two) letters followed by numbers.

For Intel® Desktop Chipsets, the first number that appears after the first letter refers to the chipset series."

However, it never mentions what the letters mean!!! For example, one of the examples is:

  • Intel Chipsets W790, B760, H770, and Z790 have number 7 after the first letter hence they are Intel® 700 Series Desktop Chipsets.

But, it doesn't say why those chipsets are different in relation to the different letters!

I understand what the numbers mean. And, I understand what the letter suffixes are for the processor names because my search immediately resulted in the following URL:

What Do the Letters Mean in Intel® Core™ Processor Names?

I need to know because I'm shopping for components for the next desktop that I need to build.

Not sure where this is summarized, but here's my off-the-cuff (and colored) rundown of the chipset types:

  • W - Workstation
  • X - Extreme (matched with Extreme series processors)
  • P - Non-graphics (matched with non-graphics processors)
  • B - Basic (absolute garbage, IMHO)
  • H - Multimedia
  • Q - Office (vPro Manageability)
  • Z - Enthusiast (the best choice overall, IMHO)

Hope this helps,
