How to update kernel?

When I compile some device driver, they need the kernel 2.6.16.1, But I don't how to update it form kernel 2.6.11-uc0. 

I download linux-2.6.16.1, But I don't know how using it.

In general, 

1. untar the kernel source from kernel.org 

2. apply uc0 patch from uclinux.org 

3. apply nios2nommu patch
