How to find latest microcode release, Install in Windows

1) How do I find out the latest microcode release version for my CPU? I don't see anything in the Linux Processor Microcode Data File.

2) How can I install uCode updates from within Windows, not Linux?

Please, could you provide the processor type and its Family-Model-Stepping information?

This information is essential for finding out whether there is a microcode update at all.

Because, apparently for some processors the microcode is missing in the update package, even though they are included in the list of processors supposedly getting microcode updates.

I'm not sure if what Intel said means they're helping or just posted the link to their PR bit.

As far as I know, the exploit could go back to the Pentium Pro (1995) or Pentium II (1997). Unclear on just how the speculative execution differs among different microarchs as is relevant to this issue.

You are in luck. Your processor is included in the Jan 8 updates.

It is in the subdirectory "intel-ucode" of the Linux archive download.

The file name is 06-17-06.

However, as I do not use Windows, I do not know how to put that into Windows.

I guess it's much damage control involved from Intel's side.

Keep in mind that the basic http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/5392028/ concept of the Meltdown exploit has been known since 1967.

(Back then it was seen as a reliability than a security issue.)

What I wonder about is that it generally seems incredibly hard to obtain updates from Intel if you are not a big OEM customer, see /message/520650# 520650 my request here.

I think the Intel support people helping here in this forum do their best.

But they can only give to us what they get from the actual technical people, and these seem not always the most forthcoming ones.
