Thermal sensor issue i7-7700k?

I have a brand new build; EVERYTHING NEW. i7-7700k is running at stock speeds. I have the RAM set to XMP for DDR4-2666. Motherboard is Asus Maximus IX Hero Z270.

I have found that the i7-7700k reports a momentary (a second or less) temperature spike +25 > 35 degrees Celsius anytime a program is opened, a webpage is opened, a background app runs etc. The temperature blip cascades through the cores in random order; not the same every time. This causes my heatsink fan to constantly cycle up and down. Temperatures otherwise report as steady, normal increases. Peak temperature under Prime95 blend test is 71 degrees Celsius.

Attempted solutions:

I have re-installed my heatsink and thermal paste with no change.

I have tried to manually set my fan speed in the bios. The only setting that avoids this issue is setting the temperature / fan at a constant (and loud) 80-100%. I've tried PWM and DC mode.

I have found a few user reports elsewhere on the web, all reasoning that it's just the way it is. I don't accept that. Opening a folder or browser should not spike temps +30 degrees. Not only is the fan cycling annoying, it puts undue stress on my fan; possibly shortening its lifespan.

What's the answer, if any? RMA?

Hello Everyone,

We appreciate the feedback you have provided, and your patience as we investigated this behavior. The reported behavior of the 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7700K Processor, showing momentary temperature changes from the idle temperature, is normal while completing a task (like opening a browser or an application or a program).

In our internal investigation, we did not observe temperature variation outside of the expected behavior and recommended specifications. For processor specifications, please refer to the https://ark.intel.com/products/97129/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_50-GHz Intel® Core™ i7-7700K Processor Product Specifications.

Most motherboard manufacturers offer customizable fan speed control settings that may allow for smoother transition of fan revolutions per minute (rpm). Please consult your motherboard manufacturer's manual or website for instructions on how to change default fan speed control settings.

We do not recommend running outside the processor specifications, such as by exceeding processor frequency or voltage specifications, or removing of the integrated heat spreader (sometimes called "de-lidding"). These actions will void the processor warranty.

Kindest Regards,

Ronald M.

Hi Kevin,

Good to hear that! I have my temps constantly right in front of me on my Logitech G15 (Cpu + Gpu). Never seen such behaviour.

For example: Yesterday i was watching a movie gpu load constantly 10% while staying between 24-26c.

The Cpu on the other hand (i7 7700k) freaks me out! Every second it refreshes the temperatures.

Second 1: 36c

Second 2: 54c

Second 3: 44c

Second 4: 28c

Second 5: 39c.

I have no idea what the cpu is doing... like i said before, it behaves like it is on drugs.

don't worry, we are all here for the same issues.

NO OC, nothing on background, just click even on desktop, makes cpu run to 100% randomly with high temp spike..

As i have said in one of my post: it could be bios related voltage issues, I'm pretty sure.

Note: Deliding the CPU nor the best Watercooling System does not help, i have a modified Waterchiller that allows me to drop temperatures to -8c, i ran my CPU at -1c and there was some spikes.

Hi all.

First time here!

Been having the same issues with my i7 7700k.

Everything is new, Asus Z270m -prime, i7 7700k, 32GB DDR4 2400, Gigabyte windforce OC GTX 1060, PSU 650wVS series corssair.

Idle temperatures - 21ºC / 22ºC

Spikes reaching 70 to 75ºC

Running stress test - Reaches 82 / 83º

Core nº 2 reaches temperatures a little bit higher than the other 3

Normal tasks as opening browser or any other program makes temps go up almost to 60ºC and come back down again very quickly.

Case temperature - 17º

GPU dosent go above 60ºC.

I kind of fear for the lifespan of the CPU. I know it´s ok if it works under 80º but I simply cant keep watching teperatures data every time I use the PC. I feel unconfortable gamig or rendering audio or video thinking that at any time the CPU could be overheating.

Please, let us know asap a solution to this issue.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Luís R.

Hello guys,

I'm having the same issue with 7700k. Everything is new in my build:

i7 7700k

Z270 MSI Tomahawk

Seasonic G Series 650W

Corsair H100i v2

Idle temp: 30-32 (depeding on the core with spikes of 51-53 depeding on the core), full load Cinebench (65-71) , prime95 (71-74) and FFT's (88-91 - I stopped it), gaming (Wow - 55-60 with temp spikes 68-71 depeding on the core, CS GO 79-81 with spikes of 88-91). Before Corsair H100i vs2 , I had Scythe Ninja 4 (reapplied like 3 times with different thermal paste)..so the problem is not the cooling solution. In the next second there are always temp spikes...I tried the last BIOS offered from MSI's support team via ftp, but this didn't resolve my issue....

I have an i7-7700(non-k),asus b250m-a prime motherboard and have exactly the same issues.Random CPU temperature spikes when idling and when doing small tasks like opening the browser or a program. The temperature sits at a normal 31 degrees in BIOS.when idling in windows core temperatures are chaotic...for example core 0 spikes to 50 degrees then goes back to a normal 32 degree temperature, then core 2 goes up to 49 degrees and after 1 second goes back down to 32 degrees. And so on...
