FIFO - Transfer of data

IS there anyway to transfer data in\out of the SOPC FIFO instantiated core to logic outside of the SOPC sytem without using a NIOS ? It seems from the datasheets of the core that the only way to access this type of FIFO is via commands from a uP ?

Why not use FIFO core instantiated from Megawizard?

Since we are planning to design most of the system within the SOPC environment we thought that it would be simpler to use the SOPC instantiated FIFO. Also we will be using a NIOS processor to write to the FIFO ! If we use a FIFO core instantiated from Mega-wizard, aren't we going to have to create a special custom component to interface to the external FIFO ? It also seems a bit more complex and clumsy ?!
