GPIO vs HSMC pinout

Hi all,  

I am going to design high speed application. Because my cyclone V development kit (DE10- Standard) have two output options is GPIO and HSMC. I would like to know what the different between them? Could I use GPIO pinout for high speed application? Is GPIO LVDS pinout?

Hi, 

 

1. HSMC: 

  • It is a high speed connector, which supports 9.5GHz single ended signal and 10.5GHz for differential signal.Per pin current is around 2 A and good voltage rating. 

    reliable in terms of the mating.

2. GPIO  

  • Based on the frequency of fpga for high speed IO is around 500~600MHz only so we can use with in this frequency. 

 

 

For high speed you can go with HSMC. 

GPIO have LVDS pinout.

Hi John, 

With Single Ended GPIO (not LVDS) don't go over 100 MHz with DE10 to avoid troubles.

What do you mean about "Single Ended GPIO"? On the DE10 user manual, it's just mentioned about GPIO. It doesn't say any thing else.

You have GPIO header with 2.54mm pin strip. 

When you use a pin as a single pin you usually call it Single-Ended https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/single-ended_signaling 

You can use a couple of (special) pins in GPIO header of DE10 as LVDS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/low-voltage_differential_signaling

But on the DE10 nano doesn't mention any special pins, how could I find the special pin which has LVDS?
