Problem with AN458 Alternative NiosII Boot Methods

Hi,

I am new to the NiosII processor. I am having trouble with getting the AN458 Alternative NiosII Boot Methods design example to work. I have downloaded the design files niosii-ethernet-standard-3c25.zip and an458_design_example_files.zip for the NEEK demonstration board, and followed the latest application note (August 2010.)

I want to be able to boot the Nios from EPCS, but when I run the create-this-app I get the following error messages

EPCS_CONTROLLER_BASE undeclared

EPCS_CONTROLLER_REGISTER_OFFSET undeclared

I have looked in the Quartus project and indeed there is no EPCS controller.

I have added an EPCS controller and overcome these errors (I have connected as we have in it our CycloneII i.e. to the cpu data and instruction masters). The next problem was with the building of the hello_world application which give an error File format not recognized

ERROR: converting srec file hello_world.elf.tmp.srec to binary

There is a fix for this, but it has not been incorporated in 10.0sp1

The fix is at

altera.com support/kdb/solutions/rd0801210_213.html

(sorry it won't let me add links as I am so new )

The next problem is that I get an error

Error:No EPCS layout data - looking for section[EPCS-00000]

And now I am stuck. I have very little experience of using all these command line tools, so having a good application note to follow is vital. It looks like a good example and is basically what we need for our CycloneII to boot from epcs and have two software images (safe + app.) I am just wondering if anybody has successfully managed to get this application note to work for booting from a EPCS device?

Regards,

Dave.
