So my Cyclone 10 GX development board seems to run out of the box but the BTS doesn't reconfigure it. Everything seems to proceed but it always seem to configure as the Simple Socket Server (see screenshot). S1 is set to OFF-OFF as per instructions.

So you choose a different design and it doesn't reconfigure?

Basically yes. It goes through all the motions (asks for confirmation, progress bar moves etc), but after the BTS program re-interrogates the board nothing seems to have changed.

Can you manually reprogram the device using the Quartus Programmer and the programming files (probably .sof) that are included with the BTS?

Hi there,
Sometimes the BTS may not because of the version of quartus. So you can use the quartus Tools->programmer to load the sof into your board.
The location of sof file is: cyclone-10-gx-kit-collateral\cyclone-10-gx-kit collateral\examples\board_test_system\image
If there any error in quartus or programmer, please give us the screenshot.
Best regards,
WZ

The programmer route didn't work. It reported a chain mis-match so I ran auto scan. I guessed at which Max10 it wanted so eventually I could download the SOF. The BTS wasn't happy with that, saying the running design wasn't compatible. Eventually I went for the 'Restore' button so mercifully I'm at least back running the Simple Socket server.

Hi Oliver,
Sorry I feel little confused. After you ran auto scan, then “change the file” for cyclone, and run the config, is it failed? Could u show the error log in quartus for me~
Best regards,

The programmer doesn't report a programming fail but afterwards the BTS wont connect. I've no idea what the Cyclone is running.

My recommendation: ditch the BTS. It's really just a front-end that you don't really need. Manually program the device with the Programmer. Is there something in the BTS that you are attached to?

Fair enough, not that bothered by the BTS. What I do want is some way of getting started with the development board that assures me that it's working. What would you recommend.

Hi there
Sorry for the delay because of the common holiday.
I ask the advice of the BTS team, they need the error log in your "bts_log.txt". Could u please give the error log when your BTS error happened.
Best regards,
WZ

Not at the top of my priority list, but it's moving up again. This is because the BTS seems the quickest way for me to do some hardware checks I need to do. Anyway, I found the BTS log so I'm uploading it.
