Intel RST 14.6 - BSOD after install

Hi everyone!

Having a pretty big issue with getting Intel RST 14.6 working on Win 10 x64 Pro.

My motherboard is an ASUS P6X58D-E with an ICH10R raid controller.

Have had no issues with RST on either Win 7 x64 or Win 8/8.1 x64 previously.

If I attempt to upgrade my Win 8.1 install - it fails due to the RST driver already being present. If I do a clean install of Win 10 it works until I install the RST software.

As soon as I do that I get a repeating BSOD with STOP 7B - Inaccessible_Boot_Device.

I've tried the steps in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2795397 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2795397 to no avail. I'm unable to even get into safe mode after installing the driver. The only resolution is to use system restore to roll back to prior installing the Intel driver.

If I use 8.1 with the 14.6 driver - no issues.

The issue also occurred with Intel RST 14.5 but was a bit more cryptic (it just did a BSOD with no information).

Any ideas on this issue?

Thanks Kathleen!

I miss my fast disk I/O

I really don't want to stay on 8.1 if I have to

Since the ICH10R controller is a mature product it will only support up to version 11.7 is goo to know that works with windows 8.1 with version 14.6 but is not supported you can check the readme file for the 11.7 in the following link: https://downloadmirror.intel.com/22194/eng/readme.txt https://downloadmirror.intel.com/22194/eng/readme.txt

In other words is expected to have issues since is not a validated driver for the chipset you are using.

HI Esteban,

As per http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-020644.htm Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) — Supported Chipsets and Controller Hubs my chipset is supported.

Asking me to go back to a driver that's over 2 years old and likely won't work on Win10 - seriously?

If your support page says my chipset is supported then the onus should be on you to investigate and resolve the issue.

11.7 is 9 driver packages ago and I haven't had an issue with any of them up until now.

This post helped with a workaround though /mobile/mobile-access.jspa# jive-content?content=/api/core/v3/contents/401006 https://communities.intel.com/mobile/mobile-access.jspa# jive-content?content=/api/core/v3/contents/401006

We never said that it does not support as so can read in the previous answer it it will only support up to version 11.7. The workaround you provided may solve the issue however is not a validated by Intel.

We are glad that is working now

This just can't be the official stance from Intel.

Come on, you're Intel, not any random mobo vendor.

Anybody would:

  1. go to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST- Downloads for Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST)
  2. filter downloads by Windows 10 operating system
  3. download and install 14.6.0.1029

The download page for 14.6.0.1029 has a section "This download is valid for the product(s) listed below." with the following link https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST- Downloads for Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) which points to no document in particular... This is poor documenting and there is mean we can figure out upfront installing it is going to damage our Windows 10 setup when running an ICH10 chipset. It instead points me back to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST- Downloads for Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST). The sane move from there is to choose https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/22541/How-to-find-Chipset-download-and-support-information Download How to find Chipset download and support information which is a trail of useless pages, none of which gives the slightest clue installing 14.6.0.1029 is going to bork Windows 10 boot with ICH10 chipsets. Really you should try to navigate your own site to realize what a mess it is.

So please Intel, respond to this inquiry professionally.

Regards,

Gregory

Well said gpakosz!

The Intel site is a rabbit warren but at the end of the day the notes for the 14.6 driver say 'ICHR10' supported - http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-020644.htm Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) — Supported Chipsets and Controller Hubs. I'm not the only user who has had their Windows detonated by installing this 'supported' driver. Please fix it for the next release Intel!

Just to say I have exactly the same issue (DQ45CB motherboard). Now my mirror (RAID 1) is gone and only IDE mode works. Cannot recover from this problems since friday when I updated to 14.6 in order to control disks matrix under Win10 x64. I reported the issue in two other threads. Till now no answer.

I have an update. I am on an EVGA Classified x58 E760, and I can't install any driver past 14.5.2.1088. And my bios is updated to the latest intel raid option rom of 14.8.0.2377. There are modified drivers that allow an install for a chipset even when the Intel RST doesn't like it, but the driver blob itself hasn't been modified. And that's what's broken. People can't install the thing no matter what option ROM they have. It's just doesn't seem to work.

BIOS reference: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B1_E2jaFAbT2X1owTlVPcl9uc1E&usp=sharing# list EVGA

Original Driver reference: https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=!APka55mA01d4V9M&id=5014229B9E752333!861&cid=5014229B9E752333 OneDrive

So here's what's going on. Intel needs to sell CPU's and motherboard chipsets. To do that they take a giant dump on every customer every 6 months for their 5% bump in processing power from whichever Lake named CPU they release next. So, within a given year, you'll have customers on 2(3 for this year) sets of hardware because they can't do anything but repackage the same soap in a different container. They've hit a quantum ceiling. 10 nm is hard.

So while all of this flailing is going on above in Corporate, swapping out entire computers every 6 months, their drivers are actually doing them more harm, in their new born to lose endeavor, than good. It goes against their "Gerbil on a treadmill of pointless upgrades aka I'ma genius!" corporate plan. So I've noticed that after 2 years, your chipset is done for in support. Enterprise computers/servers have bypassed this problem by removing Intel from the equation entirely. They have their own RAID software(Mdadm) and RAID enabled filesystems(ZFS), updated regularly. For example, https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/raid/mdadm/?C=M;O=D https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/raid/mdadm/?C=M;O=D. But for the "consumer/techie skim chattle", all we get is this- a clown show:

"Now comes the part where I relieve you, the little people, of the burden of your failed and useless lives. But, as my plastic surgeon always said: if you gotta go, go with a smile."

Every other major company has a "Unified Driver" for their chipsets. Even crap companies from Taiwan have unified drivers for their chipsets. But Intel- everytime they struggle, suddenly- they start charging you to overclock your cpu, and simply don't update your controller drivers- essentially holding your data hostage against an OS upgrade(like Windows 10). Which probably upsets a few people, I'd imagine. If I ever bothered to install that malignant cancerous spyware bundle. In any case, that's where I stand at the moment. I stand to never use software/bios raid on a windows machine again. No more flank straps around my data's balls in this rodeo. I learned the lesson of the little people.

Hi guys,

I have the very old ICH8R controller and have no problem running RAID1 on my system.

Don't know if it is just me, but I find the 'support' you get from the intel folks within these communities is just hit and miss at best. I personally find http://www.win-raid.com/ Fernando's Win-RAID Forum (Storage Drivers - BIOS Modding) much more informative and it actually helped me realize there is a way to upgrade the RAID ROM. And now I am using Win10 with full RAID support and no BSOD.

There are other problems I am having with Intel stuff (particularly the integrated graphics, WiDi, etc etc) and I generally find the quality of support here from the Intel folks suck big time. You are probably better off trying to find your solution elsewhere.

Nope, I was wrong. Have suffered from two spectacular BSODs since I started running Win10 a few months back. The latest BSOD corrupted my system files. So I was back to square one, suspecting it was the RAID driver that was causing all of this.

What I ended up doing was this: http://www.win-raid.com/t1795f23-Windows-installation-with-ICH-R-chipset.html Windows 10 installation with ICH8R chipset. Hopefully I will finally have a stable Win10 RAID1 system.

And once again, I would urge anyone reading this post to go instead to sites like win-raid.com for info that's actually useful. Spending time here talking to Intel staff members is a waste of time.

And I personally would stay away from computers with Intel chipsets / graphics in the future, judging from the way Intel handles these 'legacy' products that are not really so legacy - I see rampant complaints from users in a lot of messages here related to Win10 ranging from graphic card incompatibility, RAID issues, WiDi problems and all these Intel representatives say is one canned message basically "we have cut of support on Windows 10 for your product".... even for chipsets that were supposedly state of the art stuff only a few years back (e.g. Ivy Bridge GPUs released in 2012.. forget it! WiDi no longer supported in Win10).

Happy to say after about 2 months of flawless operations that my Win10 setup (with antique ICH8R and RAID enabled) is stable.

Guys - if you don't posses the absolute latest chipset from Intel (which Intel will simply categorize as 'old and unsupported'), head over to http://www.win-raid.com/ Fernando's Win-RAID Forum (Storage Drivers - BIOS Modding) for useful tips on getting things to work and what drivers / firmware to have etc.

I'm on ICH10R as well, and I can't install anything beyond 14.5.2.1088. It seems it only provides/allows AHCI drivers and no RAID drivers. 14.6 and above keep freezing up on boot. My configuration is RAID 0. And here's the funny part, my motherboard is an EVGA X58 E760 Classified with an upgraded Intel RAID Option ROM of 14.6.1.2340. And it still won't work. So that means they simply cut off driver support at the chipset level- not the option ROM level.

I'm not entirely sure why they would do that. Graphics card companies have unified chipset/GPU drivers. Why would you blow people's OS's out the water simply because you don't feel like incorporating older chipsets. That makes no sense, even for Intel- who has unified drivers for every other chipset they release that isn't RAID related.

I don't know what their problem is, but it looks like I'll be stuck at 14.5.2.1088 for awhile, even though they removed the download from their site. Here is another site that carries their older drivers, since Intel blows in that regard.

I am currently trying to work out why windows 10 won't boot due to this error on my machine after installing the latest RST driver on week-old install of windows 10. So much fun! Currently finding blog posts walking me through the command prompt deleting files... going to be a great evening! Decided to register and post whilst windows thinks it can do yet another automatic repair (hah!).

Really un-impressed and un-happy.

Hello, Loque:

Here you can find the supported controllers for Windows 10:

Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Release is designed to provide

functionality for the following Storage Controllers:

- Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI/RAID Controller

- Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI/RAID Controller

- Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI/RAID Controller

- Intel(R) C600 Series Chipset SATA AHCI Controller

These are the chipsets supported by Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology and Windows 10* (with the driver mentioned below).

If you don't have a RAID configuration in your system, there is no need to have the Intel(R) Rapid Storage software installed in your system.

This information was found in the third read me file for the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25165/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-RAID-Driver Download Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) RAID Driver
