Intel raid controller card RS3DC080 raid 5 very slow write

I am using Intel raid controller card rs3dco80

I configured it with raid 5 using 8x 8tb Toshiba enterprises hdds ...all the hard drives are latest and with same firmware. The write speed is maximum 75mb/sec

Read speed is also not good approximately 700mb/sec. I tested all the drives individually all drives are healthy and with 240mb/sec read and write

The firmware of the card is also latest version.

First two days I have 250mb/sec write speed but after two days I copied almost 16tb data....after that the write speed is very slow....Max 75mb/sec

So...what is the problem....how can I fix it....

Please help me with this....

I am using dual Intel xeon 2683v3

Asus z10pe-dw16 Mobo

64gb ram

Hello RYell3,

1. Can you please provide us with the exact model of the hard drives that you are using?

2. What is the firmware version that you currently have on your raid controller?

3. What operating system are you currently running?

Hi Sergios

The model of the drives are Toshiba 8tb MG04ACA

All drives with same model and firmware...

The individual read and write of each drive is approximately 240mb/sec

Hello RYell3,

Thank you for your reply, as first troubleshooting suggestion, please try to upgrade the firmware of your card, you can find the latest version here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28706/MR-3108-ROC-Hardware-RAID-Firmware-Flash-Update?product=77346

Intel recommends loading Factory Default setting after the firmware upgrade which will not affect data on any existing array. To do so:

1. Reboot the system and login to the RAID BIOS Console.

2. Select the controller and select 'Adapter Properties'->'Next'

3. Set the 'Set Factory Defaults' setting to 'Yes' and submit the change.

4. Reboot the system (the default settings are applied).

5. Re-configure to the desired settings in RAID Web Console.

Hello RYell3,

Our RAID adapters are meant to be mainly used in an Intel Server Boards or a Server Systems and the Firmware update may not run properly in a 3rd party board.

An FW will not destroy data as soon as RAID arrays are not in a degraded or failed state and we always recommend to have a backup.

Finally, can you please let us know what is the application or how is he measuring reads and writes?

The motherboard is Asus z10pe-dw16

Its an Intel chipset board

There is no problem with motherboard and I tried the same card with raid 0 the read and write speeds are 2000 mb/sec

I have only problem with raid 5. Any way I will check by updating the firmware and I update you in two days.....thanq you

Hello RYell3,

Thank you for waiting our response.

When it comes to performance-related matters, there are several variables involved that could impact it.

First things to double-check are:

Compatibility:

Make sure that the drives have been validated to work with the RAID controller:

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/12gb_megaraid_rs3dc080_rs3dc040_thol_10.pdf

Same for the board, I see some Asus boards on the above PDF but the model that you are using is not there.

That could have an impact as well.

How are you validating (what software is he using to measure transfer rates?):

Intel hasn't really validated or recommends specific software, though we do know about IO meter as a benchmarking application for data transfer rates.

And though fine-tuning the application to be used is also very important.

The system shouldn't be doing any other task as that could deviate resources away from the desired test.

We also have a white paper with RAID tuning recommendations available at:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007508/server-products.html

Another important consideration is that RAID 5 offers poor read/writes when compared to RAID 0, even to RAID 1.

RAID 5 and RAID 6 have the peculiarity because of the parity that is written across drives in the array.

I think it's better to stay away from Intel raid cards with raid 5 and 6 very poo performance....

I checked with the same card in raid zero the performance is good almost 2000 mb/sec read and write....all the products I am using are fully compitible for your raid card...I am using the same model raid cards since last three years in

Three workstations all the cards are good with raid zero. No problems from last three years this is my fourth workstation with same configuration but it's configured to raid 5, so the raid 5 is very poor ...75mb/sec is really bad ....I saw some other case with similar configuration in Intel forum but that guy also not solved his problem with raid 5, so if possible please check your raid card with 8x 8tb hdd using Windows 10 pro.

Fill atleast 30tb data and later check by yourself definitely you will know the performance of the card with windows 10.

Any way I think it's better to move with an external raid storage without any os.

Intel RS3DC080 RAID Controller:

is actually OEM version of LSI(Avago(Broadcom)) MegaRAID SAS 9361-8i RAID Controller:

https://www.broadcom.com/products/storage/raid-controllers/megaraid-sas-9361-8i

https://www.nix.ru/autocatalog/controllers_3ware/LSI-MegaRAID-SAS-9361-8i-LSI00417-RTL-PCI-Ex8-8-port-SAS-SATA-12Gb-s-RAID-0-1-5-6-10-50-60-1Gb_181123.html.

As say, find at least one difference. I found only difference on LSI(Avago(Broadcom)) MegaRAID SAS 9361-8i (compared to Intel RS3DC080 RAID Controller) in lack of buzzer and connector in upper left corner(if controller backplane be in left, PCI-Express connector in bottom). There may be some other differences in the controller BIOS configuration utility settings and the Intel company logo is inserted.

With RAID array level 5 and 6 not so simple. After creating logical drive(volume) RAID controller begins calculate the parity from begin to end logical drive(volume). And it’s possible that Intel RS3DC080 RAID Controller does it at full speed (100%). Therefore your write speed is so low. You need download and install latest Intel RAID Web Console 3 for Windows from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29210/Intel-RAID-Web-Console-3-for-Windows-?product=77346. And then check logical drive(volume) settings and state. RAID Web Console 3 should show how many percent of parity is calculated. You may be need change there parity calculate priority let's say to 10-15%. Or better, as I think, wait for the end calculate the parity logcal drive(volume) and then work with him. With 8x8TB drives will not be so fast (real size 8 TB drive, if correctly calculated, there will be ~7.27 TiB(8*1000*1000*1000*1000=8000000000000 bytes; 8000000000000 bytes/1024/1024/1024/1024=~7.27)). Total capacity of the logical drive for the whole volume in RAID array level 5 with so many drives will be, somewhere about, 50.88 TiB. And yet look in preferences Data scrubbing(Consistency check) and Patrol read settings.

All supported downloads for this controller: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/77346/Intel-RAID-Controller-RS3DC080.

General information about RAID array levels is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels.

General information about units of information is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Units_of_information.

Sorry for not very good english language, my main is russian.

P.S. Which RAID array level 5 stripe size was selected; and which file system and her cluster size ?
