S1200SPLR/P4000XXSFDR high speed fan throttle up for no apparent reason

Has anyone come a cross this issue or a similar issue.

Here is what we are seeing. For no reason at all that we can see the fans while throttle up to high speed and remain "screaming" until the server is restarted. The problem is random but does happen on a regular basis. The system has all the latest firmware, it is running 32GB DDR4 2133 RAM E3-1230V6 (similar problems with 1230V5). L1 support tells me it is a memory issue because the memory isn't Intel validated. The RAM in use is Crucial and is guaranteed compatible. I am sure many of us use Crucial RAM and excellent results. Intel insists that non validated memory is causing the problem yet cannot provide me with a source to get this "validated memory". The Intel support guy is really trying his best but so far, results are mediocre.

Any input will be helpful.

Hello BobGreg,

The issue you describe seems to be related to non validated memory as you stated. You can check the following document where it explains it in a bit more detail. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/server-products/server-boards/000021781.html https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/server-products/server-boards/000021781.html

In regards to whether the RAM is validated or not you can check it on the following server configurator tool selecting your particular board.

https://serverconfigurator.intel.com/exalt/RequestManager?ServletNumber=1&dynamicUser=Y&localinfo=0&RestrictionVal=SVG&APPLICATIONCODE=1 https://serverconfigurator.intel.com/exalt/RequestManager?ServletNumber=1&dynamicUser=Y&localinfo=0&RestrictionVal=SVG&APPLICATIONCODE=1

Hope this helps.

Regards

Thank you for the response. The major problem is trying to find the vendor who sells memory validated by Intel.

I have done some extensive testing and I have 3 servers with this issue. One thing I will state is that the server will throttle up when a restart is needed after a Windows update!@!!! Go figure. Then, I can let the server run while in the BIOS and no throttle up occurs. It seems the once in Server 2012R2 the problem becomes apparent.

Again, I think there is more going on here than memory validation. My 30 yeas experience as a server/system builder tells me there is more that needs looking into.

I will elaborate more when I have the time.

Hi there,

I agree with you that it is always possible that it could be something else. However, this is something in particular that we have found in this particular model. This is why we posted the article in our website.

We can try to contact you directly to see if we could work this further. You may contact your nearest https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html Intel Support Office

Dear Bob,

I have the same board and this casing and I first had the same problem: All fans roared up from start like turbines! It was very hard to get them quiet. I got the same answer from Intel support: Non-validated memory. I now have validated memory only and it still roares up once in a while.

My solution: Run 0301 BIOS update again for bios, ME, FRU and whatever there is. I copied the update files to an USB stick and the shell starts the update. Once this is done, the monster sleeps again.

Oliver
