Windows XP
Toshiba Satellite A105
Intel GMA 950 with 945GM/GU
AOC 19MVWk 19'' LCD
I'm not positive that my LCD reports any EDID information and I'm trying to modify my igxp32.inf file like others have done but I can't figure out the DTD hex codes nor find any modeline information. Any help with this would be much appreciated! I noticed archibael seems to be the expert around here and I'm hoping to catch his attention ;)

I have a Panasonic Toughbook (CF-Y5) laptop. I am trying to link it to an Acer 19 widescreen monitor but I cannot provide it with the required resolution (1440-900).
I follow other posting on this issue (the great and wise archibael) but simply cannot find the "igxp32.inf" on my laptop (I cancelled all XP restrictions on viewing system or hidden files).
My OS is XP SP 2 with Intel GMA 950 with 945GM/GU.

The .inf file is found when youextract the latest drivers to your hard drive. It's in the Graphics sub-directory.
(Be careful with the 14.29 driver download-- the .zip file seems to be missing some files or have corruption or something. Best bet is to download (not "Open") the .EXE version of the drivers and then right click the .EXE file and choose "extract"-- it should act like a .zip file and extract the required files to a directory.)
Let me know if you need further help. The model number of your monitor or better yet the EDID information from MonInfo will greatly assist.

Which version of the drivers are you trying to install from Intel when your laptop "won't let" you? If it's the .Zip version of 14.29, see above. You need to get the .exe version of 14.29 and extract them with WinZip in order to modify the .inf.
As for the Toshiba drivers, I downloaded the latest Vista Display drivers from the Toshiba website for your model, and (similar to the 14.29 Intel drivers above) I extracted the files out of the .exe with WinZip. The .inf file was in the Graphics subdirectory where I extracted them.

It's a customer's machine so I don't have easy access to it - might have to install a PCI-E video card if this isn't fixed soon.

ok so i keep trying this and editing the .inf file, but when i restart none of the resolutions actually show up that i editing in that file. All of the resolutions that were in the file to begin with still show up like i didn't even make any changes at all.
I read the website you sent me and did all those things, but it still seems like i can't get the resolutions to even show up in the menu. Am I doing something wrong?

Nelson,
Are the changes you've made making it into the registry?
If you go to a command prompt and type "regedit", then choose Find and look for "DTD", you should find that the DTD entries are all populated with what you put in the .INF file.

Would be happy to help you, prioadhi. Let me know what monitor you're trying to drive, what resolution you want, and if you can get an EDID from MonInfo when connected to it, that would be divine.

display (D-SUB) --> cable --> adapter --> computer (DVI)
I am not able to read the EDID information from a perfectly normal and modern LG F900P CRT-monitor. The same thing happened with a Samsung LE32S73BD 32" LCD-TV. Therefore I had to drag them to another room and read the edid with another computer and then do the DTD trickery with the drivers.
EDIT: it seems that there are a few people with straight d-sub connectors and still no EDID coming through. Is there anyone with GMA950 and pure DVI setup having resolution problems?
I wonder if there is a double design flaw resulting in this catastrophe...
a) Someone has made a mistake and EDID is not coming through from devices from analog D-SUB outputs. If there is no EDID, it means that custom resolutions are needed...
b) ... and there are none. The drivers for GMA 950 do not support custom resolutions. I can not set 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 or any other than the predefined resolutions which have been decided by someone responsible for the VBIOS. Now the parameters need to hacked in by hand...

For example:
I plugged in a LG F900P monitor to my Fujitsu-Siemens Si 1520 featuring 945GM chipset and graphics. It is a 19" CRT-monitor with D-SUB input. I wanted to use 1280x1024 resolution. The display properties did not let me choose that resolution even though it is a very common one. It only let me choose from the following: 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x600, and 1280x800. Also it offered only one refresh rate which was 60hz. I went through all possible options from the screen settings ("show unsupported resolution" etc.). Moninfo from Entech returned NULL EDID information from the monitor on my laptop with 945GM (GMA 950).
I then read the EDID with another computer (it had an old nVidia card) and inserted the bytes to igdlh.inf (I am using Windows Vista). Then I installed the drivers and now I could choose other resolutions. I am quite sure that non-technical users have trouble doing this hack, if they are even able to.
Please let me know if there is some other way to achieve the above.

I have never been able to set a resolution which was not available in the display properties without changing the driver configuration .inf file by hand. I do not regard this as a "feature for custom resolutions" but a hack.
Fair enough. I've not had this problem: when I unclick "Hide Modes This Monitor Cannot Display", I get every damned thing, and the ability to do single pixel changes (most graphics cards must be in multiples of 8) is a bonus for me. But I can see why you might consider it a hack if it's not that easy for you.

I can not resist the desire to note that as a developer and an experienced software engineer it is very easy for me. That said, I do not get any satisfaction wasting my time configuring some trivial piece of hardware. I also feel for those who are not able to modify their driver files. Therefore I think that everyone would win, if the drivers and the hardware would work more smoothly (I have never had this kind of trouble with other major graphics hardware vendors).

Wow. I have. Prior to Catalyst, ATI drivers were the buggiest in the business. They've made significant improvements, but even with vendors like Nvidia every time they release a driver which fixes one issue they break something else.
That said, it's no secret Intel's behind in this game. Their focus on graphics has been the corporate market and it's only comparatively recently that they have made a real push toget into consumer space, and it's obvious they're still struggling with the robustness, functionality, and overall user-friendliness of their driver software. The fact that the VideoBIOS still dictates which graphics modes are available is the perfect example of this.

Hi,
I have a sony vaio with a gma 950 vid card running on Vista Home Premium, I'm plugging it into a 24inch westinghouse lcd and the highest resolution i could get is 1920x1050, my lcd's native resolution is 1920x1200.. is there any work around on how I can increase the resolution?
I have another laptop with the same vid card but is on Windows XP, its max resolution is 1920 x 1200..

aong0827,
Download MonInfo from http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtmand report back the results from your monitor. We can probably get it working from there.

Okay, your DTD for 1920x1200 is
28 3C 80 A0 70 B0 23 40 30 2036 00 06 44 21 00 00 1A
Comma delimit it, add ",37,01" to the end, and follow the instructions here on how to get new resolutions on Intel graphics chipsets.

Thanks!
