To build your app you must have an apple developer account. Thats their requirement, not ours.

To just test your app, you can install Intel App Preview from the App Store. This will allow you to test your app using the Core plugins that are available in the XDK project settings. To test other plugins, you will need to build your app.

Correct. Once you have an apple developer account you will be able to create certs and provisioning profiles which will then allow you to build.
