MPSS start failed

I install MPSS v3.3 on CentOS v6.5 64-bit workstation. When I "did sudo micctrl --initdefaults", there is a warning: "No Mic cards found or specified on command line", and "sudo service mpss start", it show "Starting Intel (R) MPSS: [FAILED]". I also found there missing "/etc/mpss/mic*.conf".
Does someone please help me fix my problem?

Hi Weigong,

We had a similar thread related to MPSS 3.3 and Centos 6.5. Can you please refer to this link.

you might try the following steps to assure the current modules are installed correctly (assuming default kernel version *431 for Centos 6.5):

rmmod mic
micctrl --cleanconfig
mpss-3.3/uninstall.sh
reboot
yum install mpss-3.3/*.rpm
yum install mpss-3.3/modules/*431*.rpm
modprobe mic
micctrl --initdefaults
service mpss start
micctrl -s

Thank you for your help.

I follow your instructions to reinstall the MPSS. It has same problem below:

sudo micctrl --initdefaults

[Warning] No Mic cards found or specified on command line

sudo service mpss start

Starting Intel(R) MPSS:                                    [FAILED]

Hi Weigong,

Before going further let us confirm that the coprocessor is enumerated correctly by the host. 

Can you please verify the output of the following command:

lspci | grep -i "coprocessor"

We will also verify that after running 

micctrl --initdefaults

your mic.ko file was installed in the correct kernel folder by executing the following commands:

uname -r

find /lib/modules/ -name mic.ko

Can you please share the output for the above commands

Hi Weigong,

Thank you for running the commands for me. When I look at the outputs you posted I feel there may be a chance that your installed coprocessors are not seen by your host system. I would like to redirect you to the following post from my colleague addressing a similar issue.

Please try "lspci | grep Co-processor" instead, not "lspci | grep co-processor"

Thank you for your help. I am very confused about the coprocessor. I install the NVIDIA GeForce GTX TINTAN BLACK on the computer. We have some a job running on it (one job/time). I just got the result on below. Do you think I have reinstall this card or move it to another slot?

The"lspci | grep Co-processor” also does not has any output.

Hi Weigong,

Yes we can try switching the slots to confirm that the card is inserted properly and all power connectors on the card are plugged in correctly. Also, as my colleague suggested in this post we need to make sure that the coprocessor is installed on an enabled PCI slot and it is getting adequate power.

Hi Weigong,

After closely observing the output of 

lspci -v

it looks like the system is not able to detect the card and/or the PCIe link training was not completed successfully. Can you please confirm the output for the following commands/steps:

Step 1:

 dmesg | less

and search for "mic " . (by pressing "/mic "  -- note the space after mic)

In case you see a failing message for mic,  we need to confirm that "In your host BIOS, support for mapping > 4GB MMIO" is enabled.

Step 2:

After executing the following command

lspci -vvv | less

search for "Co-processor" (by pressing "/Co-processor"). Once you find the entry for Co-processor search for corresponding LnkSta. The values we are interested here are "Speed" and "Width".

A good hardware troubleshooting flowchart to follow is this one

Hi Sunny,

There are results I got on below. Both of search of "/mic" and "/Co-processor" I got same result: "No such file or directory". The host computer still running some jobs. Once it jobs done, I will be confirm the support for mapping > 4GB MMIO is enabled or no.

Hi Weigong,

Thanks for posting the output. The two searches which I suggested to use ("/mic " and "/Co-processor") were supposed to be ran as a basic pattern search on your output for "dmesg | less" and "lspci -vvv | less". The idea was to selectively look for only Co-processor related details.

From your output, one line which relates to the issue is:

mic: No MIC boards present.  SCIF available in loopback mode 

One of the requirements to use a Co-processor is that the motherboard BIOS must support memory mapped I/O above 4GB (large Base Address Register support per the PCIe specification). 

So when you get a chance please confirm that the host motherboard BIOS has support for memory mapped I/O above 4GB and it is enabled.

Also can you please share what kind of Co-processor card you are trying to install and what is the power specs for your host system.

Hi Sunny,

The host computer is Dell T7500 workstation. On this computer, it has 8 core of Intel 5520 CPU, 24GB RAM, and 1100W power.  I install a EVGA GeForce TITAN BLACK Superclocked Signature 06G-P4-3793-KR card on the PCI x16 slot. Both of 8-pin and 6-pin power code are connecting to the card.

On the BIOS setup, I do not find the memory mapping option. I think the T7500 is the highest performance workstation from Dell in 2, or 3 years ago. it should be support large memory for PCI.

Hi Weigong,

Motherboard BIOS support for memory mapped I/O above 4GB (large Base Address Register) is essential. 

Some possible hints to access the BIOS setting for extended MMIO are:

Enter your BIOS --> Look for Advanced Settings --> Look for PCI Setttings --> Look for  Memory Mapped IO above 4GB or Large Base Address or Large BAR support  --> Try to enable that setting  --> Save and exit

Also can you please share the version of your BIOS.
