Use of Solidigm (formerly Intel) 670p series NVMe SSDs on X299 VROC

Greetings.

I am currently investigating the possibility of utilizing VROC on the X299 platform for scratch disk storage in RAID 0. CPU is an Intel i9-10920X.

I realise that Intel RST is the recommended way of configuring NVMe storage solutions on X299, however, I have exhausted all other storage options on my system. I have enough free PCI-E lanes to add storage. I am also aware I can add NVMe m.2 storage thru PCI-E bifurcation and set up a striped logical array in Windows. However, this is something I would like to avoid if possible.

From what I can gather from the available documentation surrounding VROC on X299, only Intel-branded NVMe SSDs are supported. This brings up some questions.

With the sale of the Intel SSD business to Solidigm, some documentation suggests that Solidigm-branded SSDs will not be compatible, but does not appear to provide detail regarding previously existing Intel products that have been acquired by Solidigm.

I am interested in adding four 2TB Solidigm-branded 670p series (Part # SSDPEKNU020TZX1) NVMe SSDs to my configuration. I would like to clarify whether or not these would be compatible with VROC on the X299 platform now that the previously Intel-branded 670p is unobtainable due to its EOL status.

Please advise.

Many thanks for your time.

Hello, Yliannyx.

Thank you for posting on the Intel Community Support forums.

I received your case regarding the support of that particular SSD for VROC usage on your X299 platform, and I will be reviewing this with you.

As you already know, it is recommended to work with Intel RST on X299 platforms, and if you have any problems with your RST implementation the best option is to contact either the platform manufacturer (system OEM) or the RST support team in their own subforum to request RST support:

- X299 Support status: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000026106/memory-and-storage/ssd-management-tools.html

- Intel RST community: https://community.intel.com/t5/Rapid-Storage-Technology/bd-p/rapid-storage-technology

Regarding the SSD compatibility, depending on what the latest VROC version provided by the platform manufacturer is, you can review the VROC supported configurations guide, or any available guides for your platform provided by the OEM.

To be a bit more clear, the latest VROC driver for the TUF X299 MK-II provided by ASUS is VROC 6.2, and if you check the VROC 6.2 configuration guide you will see that Intel SSD 670 is not listed, but some other Intel-branded SSDs are. Additionally, consumer/regular drives were not intended for VROC usage (like the 660p or 670p), only enterprise and professional SSDs along some Optane drives (at the time) were considered for this.

- Intel VROC supported configurations guides: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000030310/memory-and-storage/datacenter-storage-solutions.html

If you have any questions, please let me know, but if that is not the case I will close the thread on December 22nd.

Hello, Yliannyx.

Good day,

This post is to inform you about the thread closure.

I previously shared that it is recommended to work with Intel RST on X299 platforms, and if you have any problems with your RST implementation the best option is to contact either the platform manufacturer (system OEM) or the RST support team in their own subforum to request RST support. I also shared some details about the supported configuration guides and hardware, but there was no response after trying to follow up.

The thread will be closed right now, and it will no longer be monitored by Intel support, but if you require any type of assistance from Intel in the future, just open a new thread, or contact us using any of the available support methods:
