After upgrading to Windows 8.1, initial internet access is delayed

I have been using Windows 8.0 and N6235 without problems in a Series 9 Samsung notebook. After booting, it took a few seconds to connect to the internet through my router and I have had no inconveniences so far.

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and from that point onwards, after booting or resuming, internet access is not available for usually more than 1 minute (it can sometimes be 2 or 3 as well). The wireless connection icon indicates that internet is available, but no program can connect. Without doing anything but waiting, the issue solves itself and connection is available again.

As additional comments :

a. Google Talk now has an additional task which is Proxy Authentication, and I don't use any proxy

b. I have upgraded drivers to latest wireless drivers that Samsung offers and the result is the same.

c. I have run the Intel software detection applet and it indicates that all drivers are up to date

Does anyone have any idea how to eliminate this delay ? I don't know how proxy authentication works, but it looked to me as this was somehow introduced by the upgrade and I cannot find a clue that this is true and/or how to fix it. (if this is the culprit).

Thanks.

Issue solved. Norton Internet Security needed an upgrade. Thanks anyway.

I have this same issue since upgrading to Windows 8.1 using a Centrino N 2230. Everything was fine using Win 8.0

When I boot up the PC the WIFI connects immediately, however if I need to reboot for any reason the WIFI will not connect for about 2 minutes even if I try to manually connect.

I'm using the latest drivers 16.5.3 and the Intel WiFi Connection Utility.

Authentication on my router is set to WPA2 AES. I have tried with No Encryption and it reacts the same way.

Not using any Internet Security other than the built in Windows Defender.

It does not make sense why it works properly on a cold start but not on reboot; so far we can only tell it is not an authentication issue. Have you tested using static IP address?

Perhaps testing the system in safe mode with networking may also help troubleshooting the issue further.

Hi Joe,

I realize this doesn't make much sense but its happening. I've been wrecking my brain trying to figure this out!

I just tried your two suggestions...

Setup the network using static IP - no change.

Tried Safe Mode with networking - no change.

Taking a look into a log may help determining what happens; these are the steps to create a log:

  • Open Intel® Proset Connection Utility.
  • Go to Tools, Intel® Wireless Troubleshooter, Wireless Event Viewer.
  • Click on File, Settings. Make sure the first box is checked and choose the log's location and filename.
  • Go to the Driver Log tab and check all boxes. Click OK.

At any moment the log file will appear in the selected folder but it may not be immediate. You may keep note of the time and restart your system for the activity to be recorded.

The log seems to be indicating some issues with the profile. Is it possible to delete the wireless profile from Intel® Proset Software and add it again?

Did anything else change before the issue started to happen?

I've completely removed and added the profile multiple times so that can't be it.

Nothing else has changed other than the upgrade from Windows 8.0 to 8.1

Other people are experiencing this same issue from the upgrade. I have thread open on the Microsoft Answers page as well... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/delayed-wifi-connect-after-restart-only-since/11c2b5a8-66fb-408e-a6b0-bd11d56723a9 Delayed WIFI connect after restart only since upgrading to Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Community

This is still an issue... are new drivers being worked on to address this or has a solution been found?

Many people have been posting about this on the Microsoft Community page...

I read the replies in the Microsoft* thread, and based on ErSto's comments, this issue seems to be affecting non-Intel® wireless adapters too, which leads me to believe this is related to the operating system or other more specific configuration (VPN, system part of a domain, third party software, firewall, etc). It may also help to upgrade your AP's firmware or test with a different AP altogether.

I wish Intel would release some new drivers for the N 2230 for 8.1

It worked flawlessly on 8.0

I found a lot of complaints here too...
