Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 poor signal strength

I have a 3165 wireless setup on my Dell Inspiron 15 7559. It shows poor signal strength for my home network, even if I am within a few feet of the wifi router.

I have reinstalled the driver and am on version 19.51.14.1, which I believe is the latest.

Is there a way to test the 3165 and make sure it is working properly?

thanks,

Jim

Hello cavalier90,

Thank you for joining this Intel Community.

I understand that Wi-Fi signal strength is weak on your computer with Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165. I would like to assist you.

According to the description of the issue, your computer shows weak Wi-Fi signal strength when it is connected to your home network. Does this happen if you connect it to other networks?

Now, there are different reasons why your computer is having this issue including Windows* updates, power management settings or system configuration.

Because you are using an Intel generic version, I am wondering if you experience this issue if you installed the driver provided by your system manufacturer. I recommend you to perform a clean installation of the wireless driver.

If the issue still persists after performing this installation, you can try installing the Intel generic version, too.

Thank you for your prompt response. I had the same issue with the drivers from Dell, so I did a clean install of the generic Intel drivers and I still have the same issue. if I move more than 10 feet away from my wifi router, I lose the connection. I also verified i had the recommended settings as well.

Hello cavalier90,

Thank you for your response.

In this case, we may need to gather more information to troubleshoot this issue. I am wondering if you remember when this issue started happening. Is it an out-of-box problem?

When experiencing weak Wi-Fi signal, you can check if other devices have the same behavior. Additionally, electronic noise from cell phones, microwave ovens, or other devices on the same frequency, can interfere with signal transmissions. If you are using 5 GHz band, try using the 2.4 GHz band, or vice versa.

In addition, you can set the adapter to maximum performance.

Wanner,

thank you for your response. I have had this laptop for a little over one year. this issue just recently started happening, prior to that, it was working fine. I am not sure if it coincides with a windows update or not.

the issue occurs on both the 5GHz and the 2.4GHz bands. none of my other laptops, desktops, or phones are having this issue. I have also made sure the power settings are configured for maximum performance and still have the issue.

I have attached a file that contains the SSU Scan log for the adapter.

I'm not sure if there is something in there that can help or not.

is there a diagnostic tool that we can run to test the adapter?

thanks,

Jim

I have also attached the latest WLAN report, if that helps.

I think I have figured out the issue. It looks like the antenna wire that connects to the AC 3165 was cut, when the laptop was accidentally dropped.

I am going to repair that and see if I still have issues.

Hello cavalier90,

Thank you for letting us know about this.

Because this issue seems to be related to a hardware failure, our recommendation is that you can contact your system manufacturer to make sure the problem is addressed correctly.
