Intel PROSet wireless software; 802.1x associating issues; Intel Wireless Troubleshooter/Manual Diagnostic Tool do nothing

Very strange behaviour..

Intel PROSet.. seemingly overnight..

a. Just stopped being to associate 802.1x/Enterprise based wireless networks. Personal sec (PSK) is fine. But 802.1x/enterprise networks it can't associate to.

I can default to Microsoft Windows utility and it connects fine.

b. To make matters worse in the PROSet utility, Tools -> Intel Wireless Troubleshooter and Tools -> Manual Diagnostic Tool do nothing. I can select them from the Tools menu and it does nothing.

Infact, the Intel Wireless Troubleshooter, when selected, says 'Operation Command Successfully' .. but eventuates nothing ?

So I can't even see what output/error i'm seeing why it can't connect...

Do I need to clean out PROset ? I've already done this.. with a basic uninstall..purge all profiles, etc.

Maybe a cleanup tool exists ?

Hello mpgioia,

Thanks for posting in our communities. We understand you're experiencing issues to connect to 802.1x networks.

There's not a dedicated tool to uninstall or clean residual files for Intel® PROSet/Wireless. The regular uninstall process should be enough.

In order to better assist you, please provide us with the following information:

- Do you receive any error messages when trying to connect to this network(s)? If so, please provide us with a screenshot of the error.

- Did you notice any changes on the system when the issue started (Windows* updates, new software installed, etc.)?

- Intel® PROSet/Wireless profile management was used in legacy Windows* versions. Is there a reason why you need this feature on Windows 10*?

Also, we would like to gather some more information about your system. Please download and run the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/pt-br/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- Intel® System Support Utility and share the resulting report with us.

To enable file attachments, you will need to switch to the advanced editor mode while replying.

- Do you receive any error messages when trying to connect to this network(s)? If so, please provide us with a screenshot of the error.

No. It just fails to associate to the network.

- Did you notice any changes on the system when the issue started (Windows* updates, new software installed, etc.)?

Yes.. I would say Creator's Update caused this.. It was working fine for an extraordinarily long time on Windows 10 prior to Creators Update.

- Intel® PROSet/Wireless profile management was used in legacy Windows* versions. Is there a reason why you need this feature on Windows 10*?

Well.. Since Creators Update.. The 'Network and Internet Sharing' mmc has completely become null/void, and been replaced by Windows 10 styled 'Settings' 'app' wizard.. .. or is it just me ? Thus shielding many of the configuration settings from the admin. I.e. You used to be able to go into the PEAP specific area and specify user credentials, computer credentials, etc. All that is now gone. The Intel PROSet software still provides more granularity on Setting up 802.1x configuration settings than native Windows.

What about the 'Tools' -> 'Intel Wireless Troubleshooter' and 'Tools' -> 'Manual Diagnostic Tool' menu settings.. and the fact they do nothing for me.. Is that confirmed ? Or should they bring up the appropriate tools that they are labelled for ?

Hello mpgioia,

Thanks for your reply.

Some Windows 10* options were moved to the settings menu after the Fall Creators Update, that's the case for most network options.

As for the Intel® Wireless Troubleshooter and Tools, we're not sure how you're able to see these options. They're legacy features that were present on Windows 7*, but are no longer supported on Windows 10*.

We recommend performing a clean driver installation. You can find detailed instructions on this process here:

- https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000022173/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html Clean Installation of Wireless Drivers

Please bear in mind that wireless connections are no longer managed by Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software. This is now managed by Windows*.

Hello mpgioia,

We haven't heard from you in a while. Did you have the chance to clean install the drivers for your wireless adapter and connect to secure networks?

Not the case at all.

They were working for a long time on Windows 10. Something has changed recently... when I say recently.. I mean a year or so ago. Since Creators Update.. seemingly..

802.1x association is still broken from PROSet ... even with a 'Discard Settings' uninstall...

The aforementioned 'Tools' (within PROset iframework utility) still do nothing...

Hello mpgioia,

Thanks for your reply.

The troubleshooting options for Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software Enterprise are not present on Windows 10*. We've tried reproducing the issue but this options are not present.

Please refer to the following table to find the features available for this software on Windows 10*:

- https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007149/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html Feature Comparison for Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software Enterprise

As for 802.1x authentication, we would like to gather more details:

- Intel® System Support Utility report.

1. Download the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- latest Intel® SSU.

2. Run the scan and select to include "everything."

3. Name and save the report.

- Are you using the IT Administrator package for https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000017246/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software?

- What are the exact steps you're following when creating the profile for 802.1x?

Best regards,

Before we go down SSU path...

It's evident, the posture of the app is not sane, if it's presenting me with those two 'tools' in the drop down 'Tools' menu.

Maybe we should focus on a proper (perhaps even involve some registry parsing and, hopefully, deletion) deletion of Intel PROset ?

And then hopefully 802.1x / Enterprise Security option for associating to an wireless network will just fix itself..

Also, can you show me a screenshot of Intel PROset running on a Windows 10.0.1709 (Fall Creators Update) / (version from my sysinfo is 10.0.16299)

Hello mpgioia,

Thanks for your reply.

We've already testing a complete software removal by performing a clean driver installation. However, please allow us some time to investigate if there's a way to remove Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software traces from registry.

Here's the requested screenshot, you may click on it for better resolution:

Hello mpgioia,

Thanks for clarifying.

Please check https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005813/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html this article regarding Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility. The article notes the following:

"Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility is not supported on Windows® 10 and is no longer installed by default on other Windows OS. First, you must install Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility. To install this feature, see how to https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005564.html customize installation."

Even if you managed to install the tool on Windows 10*, it is not compatible and it's expected for several features not to work as in previous Windows OS* versions.

In order to keep using 802.1x wireless authentication on Windows 10*, please allow Windows* to manage your connections.

Let us know if there's anything else we can do for you.

Best regards,

Just coming back to this... because it is frustrating as hell....

Why supply WiFi Connection Utility still if it is no longer supported on Windows 10 ?

Is it purely for a limited time while Windows 7 and 8.# NT kernel revisions are still supported ? Upon which the WiFi Connection Utility will then be sunsetted ?

And then, I presume you'll decouple drivers from the application software ?

I can't be the only one frustrated by this....

I.e. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007013/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007013/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html

This shows an article update in Dec 2017.

Yet, at the bottom of the article it talks about support for XP, Vista and 7. ... Not even 8.

Yet it worked on 8. Happenstance ?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet Microsoft themselves have sunsetted mainstream support Windows 8 earlier this year.

The way I see it.. you should just kill off Intel PROset and WCU.. ? I don't know why article's are being updated and the app is still around...

So it's evident,

a. Intel is no longer developing Intel PROset ? And it's heavily in sustain mode only. No future to port it to Windows 10 ?

Or,

b. There is an effort on porting it to Windows 10 ?

Which is it ?
