We have several Dell Latitude 3520's, more are coming, with an Intel AX201 wireless adapter in them, that are experiencing connectivity issues. These issues take place whether the connection is an 802.11ac or 802.11ax based. The problem occurs when our uses authenticate using 802.1x to gain access to our network. When first connecting our users will authenticate successfully and have access to the network but, when the reauthenticate interval expires L3 connectivity gets dropped. The user will authenticate successfully but L3 connectivity stops. To clear this up we have to either disconnect/reconnect to the WiFi or wait for the next reauthentication interval to expire and L3 connectivity will return.
We are an Aruba shop and at locations where this issue currently exists we are running Aruba IAP-305s and IAP-535s. We have worked with Aruba to rule out an issue with their WAPs via packet captures and debugs. When the issue occurs we can see the Aruba WAPs sending the icmp packets back to the laptop but the laptop does not see them.
What we tried so far without any change:
- Different SSID's.
- Authenticating against our RADIUS infrastructure or locally against the WAP virtual controller.
- Different reauthentication intervals from 10mins to a few hours.
- AX201 firmware versions 22.80, 22.70, and 22.60.
- Intel recommended settings for 802.11ax connectivity.
What has worked so far:
- When we use a PSK for the SSID there are no issues.
Laptop(s) details:
Dell Latitude 3520
NIC - AX201
WIN10 - 20H2 - build 19042.1288
I've attached an Intel scan to this posting.

Hello again
The driver I recived yesterday resolves the problem with Wi-FI 6 AX cards in HP notebooks. After loosing IP and 5-8 times a day, there has been no problems since yesterday.
Next question, we also expirience problems with "Wireless-AC 8265" cards. Does the provided driver also adresse these issues ?

Hello mbardello,
Thank you for posting on the Intel
- Was everything working before?
- Is the issue present in other devices in the network or just when using the Dell laptop?
- Does the issue persist when using the 2.4GHz band?
- Were any changes performed recently to the setup?
- Have you tried using the drivers provided by Dell?
- Does the issue only happen when using those 2 access points?
- Do you get any error codes on the device manager?
We will also need you to provide us with some logs, we will send you an email to the address you register on the community forum with the instructions on how to get the logs. Please reply with the information of the logs via email, because these files may contain private information that should not be posted in the thread.

Hello mbardello,
In order to continue with the assistance, please share with me the following information:
- The recommendation is to use authentication WPA3 in business environments, are you using this type of authentication?
- Have you upgraded the wireless controller firmware to the latest version?
- Before the issue started, were any changes made to the environment? This could include driver updates, Windows* updates, and more.

Hello @JosueO_Intel
We have a similar problem. New HP EliteBooks with the Intel AX201 160MHz Adapter have after a certain time an interruption with the WiFi5 (802.11ac with WPA2+802.1x). The connection is not disconnected (IP address remains) but we can't ping any address (intern server or a website with IP/DNS). This problem doesn't exist with the older EliteBooks clients (same WiFi with the same SSID and 802.1x).
I have contacted the HP Support and ZyXEL Support and take this comment in this forum https://community.intel.com/t5/Wireless/Intel-R-Wi-Fi-6-AX201-160MHz-22-80-1-1-disconnects/m-p/1326555/emcs_t/S2h8ZW1haWx8dG9waWNfc3Vic2NyaXB0aW9ufEtWSFRLVE1CTFlCTU45fDEzMjY1NTV8U1VCU0NSSVBUSU9OU3xoSw#M38548.
HP said: It is a WiFi problem
ZyXEL said: It is a client problem
I say: it is a client with the 802.1x WiFi problem :-).
It doesn't matter if 2.4GHz or 5GHz, after in approximately 3-5 minutes the traffic is in-/outcoming again.
The same scenario with WiFi (WPA2+PSK and in Homeoffice WPA3+PSK) have no problems.
Our envoirment:
ZyWALL310 (4.65 Firmware the newest)
ZyXEL NWA5321-AC (6.10 Firmware the newest)
Synology NAS as RADIUS
Client OS: Windows10 21H1
Intel AX201 Driver: 22.70.6 (from HP site)

No news as of yet. We are working with Aruba again today to collect additional WAP debug logs and air captures. Previously sessions and logs we collected revealed L3 packets being sent from the Aruba WAP toward the client but the client not receiving them. So far on our end it looks like a client issue.

having an almost identitcal issue authing against a diff wireless system
try this...
We’ve rolled back to the Intel AX201 driver 22.30.0.11 and IME driver 2040.100.0.1029. - doing both cleared it up for us (but creates some other issues with camera)

For business environments our recommendation is to use WPA3, please try using this authentication and test the systems to check if the issue persists.
We will send you an email requesting you some logs in case the issue persists.

We haven't tested with WPA3 yet but that can't be the solution, correct? We are purchasing a100 or more Dell laptops with the AX201 adapter and they need to work on WPA2-Enterprise. We have over 2500 users spread out over dozens of locations and turning on WPA3 would create more connectivity issues for us due to some legacy clients we have. I agree that WPA3-Enterprise is where we need to be but that's not the issue here. We have tested earlier versions of the 22.xx code and there are no issues. It seems starting with version 22.60, and thereafter, something broke that caused this issue.

Hi all
@mbardello we have also looks with ZyXEL and see in the firewall/accesspoint + client log that ICMP packets (ping) go out but not comes in. Ping to a intern IP gives not answer but in the router log you can see the package is go out.
Looks like a issue on the adapter not on the network!
@JosueO_Intel I have create a new WiFi network with WPA3-Enterprise and the issue is also occured! I really don't know what else we can to test.

Yes, we still need assistance at this point. What version of the IME driver does Intel recommend we should be using?

Hello mbardello,
In this case, our recommendation is to always use the drivers provided by the OEM, you can find the drivers for the Latitude 3520 in the following link.
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/latitude-15-3520-laptop/drivers
You can also find the generic version of the drivers in our download center.
Let me know if this helps you with the issue.

Josue O.

It looks like Aruba and Intel have spoken regarding our issue and we have also spoken with an Intel engineer. Seems Intel has a fix for this issue which will be released in January 2022.

Hi Mbardello,
Thanks a lot for update, please keep us posted. We have the very same issue on hundreds of HP machines. Issues started with deployment of WUFB (Windows Update for Business) which is updating our drivers to 22.70. Version 22.40 and 22.60 seems to be stable but replaced regularly by WUFB. Updating to 22.90 doesn't provide solution - looking forward to new version.
